Calculation of solid-vapor equilibria for cryogenic carbon capture

Giorgia De Guido et al.

Summary: This work introduces a thermodynamic model for calculating solid-vapor phase equilibria in the presence of solid carbon dioxide, with validation done using experimental data for CO2 capture. The proposed method shows promising results in determining suitable operating conditions for separating CO2 from flue gas.

Modeling phase behavior of nano-confined fluids in shale reservoirs with a modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: This work proposes a modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong (m-SRK) equation of state (EOS) for modeling the fluid phase behavior in nanopores. By defining fluid distribution coefficient, relative effective molecular volume coefficient, and nano-confined index, the molar volume term in SRK EOS is revised. The empirical formulas of adsorption layer thickness and critical temperature shift are established, and two analytical formulas are derived for calculating critical property shifts. The computational accuracy of critical temperature shift is significantly improved compared to other analytic models, especially for nanopores with a dimensionless radius greater than 0.2. The nano-confined index comprehensively reflects the phase transformation law of nano-confined fluids.

Proper Use of the DIPPR 801 Database for Creation of Models, Methods, and Processes

Joseph C. Bloxham et al.

Summary: The DIPPR 801 database, maintained by the Design Institute for Physical Properties, is the world's largest collection of critically evaluated pure-species thermophysical property data, widely used by engineers and academics. This paper responds to the misuse of this database in literature by explaining the critical evaluation process for property values and outlining common mistakes, as well as providing a guide for using the DIPPR database for academic and industrial purposes.

Advanced boil-off gas studies for liquefied natural gas

Saif Z. S. Al Ghafri et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments to measure BOG production and pressure change under various industrial conditions for LNG-like binary mixtures of methane and ethane. Three distinct stages of BOG evolution were identified and a new non-equilibrium model using the GERG-2008 equation of state showed good agreement with experimental data in the self-pressurisation and homogeneous stages but had limitations in the transient stage.

Summary: A numerical model considering phase change and external heat leakage was established to study the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic of a type C LNG tank under sinusoidal sloshing excitation. The feasibility of the numerical model was verified, and it was found that the sloshing excitation has significant influences on the thermophysical process and the BOG generation of the LNG tank.

A Framework for Multi-Objective Optimization of Plate-Fin Heat Exchangers Using a Detailed Three-Dimensional Simulation Model

Patrick Haider et al.

Summary: The design of a multi-stream plate-fin heat exchanger can be fully or partially automated by utilizing a detailed simulation model and an optimization routine, formulated as multi-objective optimization and solved using a genetic algorithm. The optimization aims for high efficiency, low pressure drop, and low unit weight by adjusting various parameters, and the resulting Pareto-set analysis provides a good overview of possible solutions. The comprehensive simulation model employed in the optimization framework allows for easy adaptation to other engineering tasks.

Study of cryogenic CO2 capture with solar-assisted VAR system

Chelimila Sateesh et al.

Summary: The continuous accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is a major contributor to global warming potential. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an effective modern approach to capture CO2 from industrial processes and store it for further use. The cryogenic carbon capture method can yield high purity CO2 with negligible secondary emissions, but it requires a significant amount of energy.
