A comprehensive review on optimization of hybrid renewable energy systems using various optimization techniques

M. Thirunavukkarasu et al.

Summary: With increasing energy prices and the threat of climate change caused by pollutants from fossil fuels, there is a growing preference for renewable energy. However, implementing hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) is challenging due to interference, uncertainty, and high costs. This paper provides a concise review of recent progress in optimizing different HRES using classical methods, artificial intelligence, hybrid algorithms, and software-based optimization tools. AI-based techniques show promise in providing global solutions in less time, but there are deficiencies that can be overcome by using hybrid optimization algorithms. The analysis also emphasizes the importance of considering sources like hydro, geothermal, biomass, and biofuel in HRES optimization.

Optimal Design of Hybrid Renewable Systems, Including Grid, PV, Bio Generator, Diesel Generator, and Battery

Meisheng He et al.

Summary: Renewable energies are considered the most effective solution for reducing CO2 emissions and ensuring a stable power supply. This study explores the ideal combination of components based on economic, environmental, and technical factors. Key considerations include land constraints for PV panels and the imposition of CO2 penalties in locations where diesel generators and the grid are used for electricity generation. The findings suggest that hybrid systems, even in areas with reliable grid electricity and minimal blackouts, can be a viable option. The optimal combination proposed for the case study region, with a daily load demand of 890 kWh and peak load of 167.2 kW, consists of an off-grid hybrid system comprising PV panels, bio generator, diesel generator, and batteries. The optimization results indicate a net present cost (NPC) of $1.02 million and a levelized cost of electricity (COE) of 0.188 $/kWh. Additionally, sensitivity analyses were conducted to account for different conditions and make the study applicable to other scenarios in the case study region.

Summary: Electricity is a basic human requirement and can be supplied through either the grid or off-grid methods. This study focuses on designing an optimal Microgrid (MG) model for rural electrification using different renewable energy resources. The performance of the system is evaluated based on power system reliability, economic costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. Different optimization techniques like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE), Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO), Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm (SFLA), Reptile Search Algorithm (RSA), and RUNge Kutta Optimizer (RUN) are implemented and compared to find the most reliable and cost-effective model.
