Recent technological advancements in membrane distillation and solar stills: preheating techniques, heat storage materials, and nanomaterials - a detailed review

Mohamed Abdelgaied et al.

Summary: Freshwater and energy are vital for societal growth and progress. The need to develop desalination technologies to increase productivity and reduce energy consumption is urgent due to freshwater scarcity and rapid population growth, especially in remote countries. This study provides a comprehensive review and detailed comparison of modifications and innovations in membrane distillation unit design and solar still design. The aim is to reduce electricity consumption rates and maximize productivity and efficiency through improvements in preheating technology, thermal storage materials, and nanomaterials technology.

Evaluation of Solar Energy Powered Seawater Desalination Processes: A Review

Mudhar A. Al-Obaidi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the current status and economic feasibility of solar energy systems in seawater desalination processes. It finds that although solar energy systems have the potential to significantly reduce carbon footprint, the cost of water production is still high. Therefore, further research and development of solar energy systems or the implementation of carbon taxes on fossil fuels are necessary.

Economic Design of Solar-Driven Membrane Distillation Systems for Desalination

Yih-Hang Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a two-stage design approach for SDMD systems using steady state and dynamic simulation models to minimize total annual cost, exploring different membrane distillation configurations like AGMD, DCMD, and VMD. The unit production costs of optimal SDMD systems using different configurations decrease as membrane unit cost decreases, showing the potential for cost reduction in solar-driven desalination systems.

A decentralized water/electricity cogeneration system integrating concentrated photovoltaic/thermal collectors and vacuum multi-effect membrane distillation

Qian Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates a decentralized water/electricity cogeneration system combining concentrated photovoltaic/thermal collectors and a vacuum multi-effect membrane distillation system. The system in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, can convert around 70% of solar irradiance into useful energy, producing 562 kWh of electricity and 5.25 m(3) of distilled water per m(2) of solar collector area annually. The exergy efficiency stabilizes at 25-27%, with the desalination cost ranging from $0.7-4.3/m(3) depending on the solar collector cost and electricity price.

Distributed solar desalination by membrane distillation: current status and future perspectives

Qiuming Ma et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation (MD) shows promise in solar-driven desalination, but faces challenges such as limited production and energy performance, unclear relation between solar collecting and membrane areas, and lack of discussion on efficient condensation. Future research directions include enhancing solar energy utilization through solar direct heating and concentration, reducing energy consumption through module stacking and heat recovery, and exploring enhanced vapor condensation. Field tests on small distributed solar-driven MD systems are also crucial for the future.
