Life cycle carbon emission and cost-effectiveness analysis of electric vehicles in China

Xiaopeng Guo et al.

Summary: Electric vehicles play a crucial role in energy transition and low-carbon development. Evaluating their energy-saving emissions and cost-effectiveness is crucial. This paper establishes a life cycle carbon emission model and cost model, and combines them with emission inventory and calculated costs to establish a marginal emission reduction cost model. The results show that electric vehicles reduce 47% of life-cycle carbon emissions, mainly in the utilization phase; electric vehicles have lower emission and usage costs, but still cannot compensate for the higher initial purchase costs compared to gasoline vehicles; under current conditions, electric vehicles have higher marginal abatement costs affected by various factors, but with potential for decline; when gasoline prices exceed 9.8 CNY/L (1.372 USD/L), the abatement costs of electric vehicles become negative, making them an effective option for energy saving and emission reduction.

Assessment of the Economic Efficiency of the Operation of Low-Emission and Zero-Emission Vehicles in Public Transport in the Countries of the Visegrad Group

Slawomir Stec

Summary: Transportation is a key sector of the European economy, but the intensive development has led to increased harmful emissions. Measures to reduce emissions, including promoting low-emission and zero-emission vehicles, have been implemented by the European Union and various governments. An economic evaluation showed that electric buses are the most cost-effective option, followed by CNG-powered buses, while hydrogen buses have the highest operating costs due to their expensive purchase prices. The forecasted changes in fuel and energy prices, as well as inflation, will have a significant impact on the operational costs and economic efficiency of different types of vehicle drives.

The Second Generation Electromobility in Polish Urban Public Transport: The Factors and Mechanisms of Spatial Development

Robert Guzik et al.

Summary: The study investigates the factors influencing the development of modern electromobility in Polish urban public transport and finds that the adoption of electromobility is a result of a combination of favorable economic, urban, social, and technological characteristics of a given city. Zero or low emission buses are more common in economically strong, high-ranked cities with a well-developed tertiary economy and high human capital. Proximity to low emission bus producers also positively influences electromobility implementation. Leadership in modern electromobility is seen as part of the proactive development policies of cities aimed at improving residents' quality of life.

Summary: This study presents initial experiences of battery-electric bus trials in Oslo to compare the total cost of ownership between E-buses and diesel buses, and to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and policy implications of E-bus adoption. The results show that successful contract change orders and support from authorities can accelerate the rollout of E-buses, even though the high TCO of urban E-buses requires financial support from public budgets. Despite challenges, operators are positive about further E-bus adoption, indicating that financial risk plays a key role in supporting innovation in the transportation sector.
