Self-sustaining bioelectricity generation in plant-based microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) with microalgae-assisted oxygen-reducing biocathode

Pranab Jyoti Sarma et al.

Summary: For the first time, the development of a microalgae-based biocathode was studied in a three-chamber PMFC incorporating Chlorella sorokiniana. Three different indoor plants, Epipremnum aureum, Philodendron erubescens, and Anthurium andreanum, were chosen for the study. Among them, P. erubescens exhibited the highest performance with a power density of 32.21 mW m(-2) and a current density of 63 mA m(-2), representing a 31% increase compared to previous bacterial biocathode studies.

Amnis: Optimized stream processing for edge computing

Jinlai Xu et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a novel stream query processing framework called Amnis that optimizes the performance of stream processing applications through careful allocation of computational and network resources available at the edge. Amnis differentiates itself by considering data locality and resource constraints during physical plan generation and operator placement, as well as coflow dependencies for optimizing network resource allocation. The proposed techniques in Amnis show significant improvements in end-to-end latency and overall throughput compared to default resource aware scheduler in Storm.

Smart Strawberry Farming Using Edge Computing and IoT

Mateus Cruz et al.

Summary: Strawberries are sensitive fruits that require intensive use of agrochemicals and pesticides due to pest and disease issues. A developed IoT platform integrates monitoring services for environmental and crop data analysis, while using a computer vision model for real-time disease detection. The system also supports long-distance data transmission using LoRa communication and machine learning capabilities for outlier detection. These technologies together aim to mitigate disease problems and environmental damage in strawberry farming.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy applied to microbial fuel cells: A review

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is an efficient and non-destructive test method for analyzing the bioelectrochemical processes of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). This review quantifies the contribution of various internal parts to the total impedance of an MFC to identify the key factors limiting its output performance. The conditions and representative equivalent circuit plots for MFC EIS measurement are introduced. The application of distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis to MFC is also reviewed to gain insights into bioelectrode reactions and monitor biofilm formation.

Toward Plant Energy Harvesting for 5G Signal Amplification

Yao Xu et al.

Summary: The work designs an electricity generation demo from plant microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) promoted by graphene quantum dots (GQDs) that can output an electrical power of 320 mW/m(2) continuously on average. The ideal concentration for optimal power outputs is determined qualitatively, and the GQDs-associated PMFC device is used as a power supply for IoT applications, reducing the number of 5G base stations. This demonstrates a unique way of building nanobiotechnology applications in bioelectric power generation utilizing PMFCs energy.
