The Thyroid Pathologist Meets Therapeutic Pharmacology

Christopher M. Sande et al.

Summary: The effects of different drug classes on the thyroid gland are discussed in this review, including iodine, antithyroid drugs, psychotropic drugs, antibiotics, cardiotropic drugs, antidiabetic drugs, and immunomodulatory agents. Each drug class has distinct histologic findings in the thyroid gland, which may vary depending on the pre-therapy condition. Some drugs, such as radioactive iodine and psychotropic drugs, induce mild to severe histologic changes in the gland. The article also mentions the complications of checkpoint inhibitor therapy, such as thyroiditis and hypothyroidism, and their unique histologic findings.

Inherited Disorders of Thyroid Hormone Metabolism Defect Caused by the Dysregulation of Selenoprotein Expression

Kyu Won Lee et al.

Summary: This article discusses the causes and classification of impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones, with a specific focus on the significant deficiency of T3 hormones due to inadequate function of deiodinases. The research also involves selenium supplementation and T3/T4 combination treatment for this issue.

Overview of the 2022 WHO Classification of Familial Endocrine Tumor Syndromes

Vania Nose et al.

Summary: This article reviews the familial tumor syndromes involving the endocrine organs, focusing on the updates in the upcoming fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors. It discusses the histopathological and molecular genetics aspects of these syndromes, including newly defined familial cancer syndromes and reported findings in DICER1 syndrome. The article also covers updates on syndromic and non-syndromic familial thyroid diseases. The importance of diagnostic criteria, potential genes involved, and immunohistochemical studies supporting diagnosis are emphasized. The article highlights the role of pathologists in identifying tumors within familial cancer syndromes and the challenges in defining these entities and determining their clinical outcome.

International Histopathology Consensus for Unilateral Primary Aldosteronism

Tracy Ann Williams et al.

Summary: The HISTALDO consensus is useful to standardize nomenclature and achieve consistency among pathologists for the histopathologic diagnosis of unilateral PA. CYP11B2 immunohistochemistry should be incorporated into the routine clinical diagnostic workup to localize the likely source of aldosterone production.

Cytokeratin profiles in pituitary neuroendocrine tumors

Sylvia L. Asa et al.

Summary: The presence and patterns of keratins play a critical role in the classification of pituitary neuroendocrine tumors. CAM 5.2 and CK18 are the most valuable markers, with almost identical staining patterns observed.
