Green synthesis and characterisation of nanocrystalline NiO-GDC powders with low activation energy for solid oxide fuel cells

Mehdi Choolaei et al.

Summary: This work details the preparation of nanocrystalline Ni-Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 (NiO-GDC) anode powders through a novel single-step co-precipitation synthesis method, with subsequent characterization revealing key material properties. The synthesized NiO-GDC cell demonstrated high catalytic activity at low temperatures due to a synergetic effect among different anode composites' constituents. The study also provided insights into the activation energies of the anodic processes and the adsorption/desorption behavior of water molecules on the composite surface.

Excellent kinetics of single-phase Gd-doped ceria fuel electrodes in solid oxide cells

Andreas Nenning et al.

Summary: Ceria-containing electrodes offer superior ionic and electronic conductivities compared to current cermet alloys, making them ideal for dry hydrocarbon fuel and CO2 electrolysis applications. Anodes with a single phase gadolinia doped ceria functional layer perform even better than cermets, but must address the drawback of lower electronic conductivity. By adjusting temperature, thickness, and atmosphere, the polarization resistance of GDC anodes can be divided into ohmic, electrochemical, and gas diffusion contributions. At 800 degrees C, the electrode has extremely low ohmic resistance, even with low H2 and H2O pressures and significant gas phase diffusion kinetics.

Mechanistic insights into the phase transition and metal ex-solution phenomena of Pr0.5Ba0.5Mn0.85Co0.15O3-delta from simple to layered perovskite under reducing conditions and enhanced catalytic activity

Kyeounghak Kim et al.

Summary: This study used density functional theory calculations and in situ X-ray diffraction spectroscopy experiments to investigate the phase transition and ex-solution processes in Co-doped Pr0.5Ba0.5MnO3. The results revealed that the selective formation of oxygen vacancies at the Pr layer plays a key role in the transition to layered perovskite. Additionally, the ex-solved Co nanoparticles exhibited higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation compared to the doped counterpart, offering insights for designing highly-active perovskite-based redox catalysts.
