NiMo@C3N5 heterostructures with multiple electronic transmission channels for highly efficient hydrogen evolution from alkaline electrolytes and seawater

Xiuming Bu et al.

Summary: In this study, a unique heterostructure catalyst composed of NiMo cores and C3N5 shells was designed and demonstrated to exhibit stable and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in alkaline electrolytes and seawater. The carbon-based shell effectively protects the catalyst core from seawater poisoning. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the interface between NiMo cores and C3N5 shells establishes multiple electronic transmission channels, providing optimized HER pathways with reduced energy barriers for the rate-determining step.

Investigation of oxygen evolution reaction with Ni foam and stainless-steel mesh electrodes in alkaline seawater electrolysis

Xiang Lyu et al.

Summary: In this study, the substrates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in alkaline seawater electrolysis were investigated. It was found that the performance of stainless-steel mesh (SS mesh) was superior to that of Ni foam in terms of overpotentials and Tafel slopes, and it exhibited excellent stability. Interestingly, the performance of SS mesh even outperformed various non-noble metal electrocatalysts and was comparable to commercial RuO2 and IrO2. The corrosion conditions of Ni foam and SS mesh electrodes were also studied.

Critical Review of Platinum Group Metal-Free Materials for Water Electrolysis: Transition from the Laboratory to the Market Earth-abundant borides and phosphides as catalysts for sustainable hydrogen production

Alexey Serov et al.

Summary: In order to address the global issue of carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen is considered the desired energy vector for transitioning to environmentally friendly fuel cell power. Water electrolysis is the primary technology for sustainable hydrogen production, but the scarcity and high cost of platinum group metals pose a barrier. Research is focusing on developing pgm-free materials, such as phosphides and borides, to replace critical catalysts and make water electrolysis commercially viable. Structure-property correlations of emerging HER and OER catalysts are extensively reviewed, highlighting the importance of crystallographic and electronic structures, morphology, and surface chemistry on catalytic activity.
