Degradation of benzene in anaerobic groundwater in the typical cold industrial region: Identification, interactions, and optimization of nitrate-/sulfate-reducing assemblages

Juanjuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study uses response surface methodology and artificial neural network to predict and optimize the effects of nitrate and sulfate on the anaerobic degradation of benzene. The experimental results show that nitrate stimulates the degradation of benzene more significantly than sulfate, and the degradation efficiency of benzene is higher under the coexistence of both electron acceptors. The optimization model predicts the optimal concentrations of nitrate and sulfate for a benzene concentration of 29.93 mg/L in groundwater, which are 0.87 mmol/L and 1.12 mmol/L, respectively. The best degradation efficiencies predicted by the models are 75.42% and 73.65% for response surface methodology and artificial neural network, respectively.

Performance and neural modeling of a compost-based biofilter treating a gas-phase mixture of benzene and xylene

Hoang Minh Giang et al.

Summary: Biofilter (BF) is a versatile gas treatment technology for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated gas streams. This study applied artificial neural networks (ANN) to determine the relationship between flow rate, pressure drop, inlet concentration, and removal efficiency in the BF treating gas-phase benzene and xylene mixtures. The model's performance was evaluated using a cross-validation method, and the results showed that the ANN model with a topology of 4-4-2 performed the best in predicting the removal efficiency of both pollutants.

Quantification and assessment of chemical footprint of VOCs in polyester fabric production

Weiran Qian et al.

Summary: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have harmful effects on human health and the chemical footprint (ChF) method can quantify their toxicity impacts. This study proposes a new method combining VOCs emissions and their human toxicity for calculating and assessing VOCs in the production of polyester fabrics. The results show that VOCs emitted during dyeing and finishing have the highest ChF, followed by crude oil refining, polyester polycondensation, and spinning processes. Specific VOCs pollutants include tridecyl polyoxyethylene ether, n-hexane, p-xylene, and 2,6-di-tert-butyl para-cresol.

Electrolytic removal of volatile organic compounds: Keys to understand the process

Andrea N. Arias et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the electrochemical degradation of substituted benzenes as models of volatile organic compounds, aiming to understand the degradation mechanisms during electrochemically assisted absorption process. Results show that the reactivity of these species increases with the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. Removal efficiencies of BTX compound were higher than 95%, indicating the effectiveness of the electrochemical process. The study also reveals that mineralization is the main pathway in BTX degradation by electro-oxidation, and the presence of aromatic intermediates depends on the electrode material used.

Performance of wet scrubbers to remove VOCs from rubber emissions

Nur Fadhilah Idris et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of wet scrubbers in removing VOCs from rubber emissions. Critical odorants were identified and it was found that wet scrubbers were not effective in mitigating odorous VOCs, with the concentration of VFAs correlating with the scrubber efficiency.

Pollution and health: a progress update

Richard Fuller et al.

Summary: The Lancet Commission on pollution and health reported that pollution was responsible for 9 million premature deaths in 2015, making it the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death. Updated data from 2019 shows that pollution is still responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, with reductions in some types of pollution offset by increases in others. Despite efforts, little progress has been made in addressing pollution, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.

Combination of granular activated carbon adsorption and electrochemical oxidation processes in methanol medium for benzene removal

Rodrigo de Mello et al.

Summary: The increase in anthropogenic activities has led to an increase in emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which poses a threat to the environment and human health. Adsorption technologies and electrochemical treatments are effective methods for removing VOCs from the air. Combining these two methods can overcome the limitations of treating diluted solutions. This study evaluated the removal of benzene from diluted water solutions using a combination of adsorption, desorption with methanol, and electrochemical oxidation. The study also found potential for the production of high-value products through electrochemical oxidation of benzene in methanol solutions.

Assessing the viability of electro-absorption and photoelectro-absorption for the treatment of gaseous perchloroethylene

Martin Munoz-Morales et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of electro-absorption and photoelectro-absorption technologies for treating gases from synthetic waste containing PCE. Results show that the electro-absorption process influences the degradation of PCE, favoring the transformation of phosgene into final products. PCE decomposition occurs in wet conditions regardless of the technology applied.
