Quinones contained in wastewater as redox mediators for the synergistic removal of azo dye in microbial fuel cells

Tao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the enhanced effects of quinones in wastewater on microbial fuel cells (MFCs) under different redox conditions. Results show that quinones improve electricity generation and COD removal in MFCs at higher current intensity. Using quinone-rich traditional Chinese medicine wastewater as co-substrate enhances the synergistic removal of azo dye in MFCs compared to sodium acetate.

Efficient decolorization of azo dye wastewater with polyaniline/graphene modified anode in microbial electrochemical systems

Ruixiang Li et al.

Summary: Azo dye pollution is a global issue with current treatment methods falling short of emission standards. Microbial electrochemical systems show promise for decolorization, with electrode modification offering a method to enhance performance. Modification with polyaniline and graphene led to the highest decolorization efficiency, attributed to altered metabolic pathways facilitating extracellular electron transfer.

Energy Extraction from Capacitive Mixing: Experimental and Computational Analysis of Chemical Aspects

J. Nicolas Cabrera et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of the double-layer expansion at the interfaces of charged electrodes on the cell voltage when a concentrated salt solution is replaced by a diluted solution. The results showed that the diffusion coefficients of the ions influenced the shape of the transient voltage, while the dilution coefficient affected the rising of voltage at equilibrium.

Evaluation of extracellular electron transfer in Pseudomonas aeruginosa by co-expression of intermediate genes in NAD synthetase production pathway

Obinna Markraphael Ajunwa et al.

Summary: This study determined the production of pyocyanin, NAD, and NAD synthetase in the electrogenic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa using a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). The co-expression of nadD and nadC genes increased the activity of NAD synthetase and resulted in higher pyocyanin concentration, NAD/NADH levels, and MFC potential in PA-A4 strain. This finding advances our understanding of NAD biosynthetic genes in PA electrogenicity.

Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Probing Riboflavin on Graphene

Agne Zdaniauskiene et al.

Summary: This study utilized SHINERS and GERS methods along with DFT modeling to investigate the structure and interactions of adsorbed riboflavin on a graphene substrate. The results demonstrated that SHINERS method can reveal detailed vibrational features of the adsorbed riboflavin and detect the activation of graphene's D-band.

Redox Mediators in Microbial Electrochemical Systems

Andre Gemunde et al.

Summary: This review discusses some of the key research questions regarding the use of redox mediators in microbial electrochemical systems, including the recycling of mediators, limitations in electron transfer rates, metabolic burden, and the interaction sites between mediators and electroactive microorganisms. To simplify the planning of mediator-based bioelectrochemical systems, molecular interaction sites are defined by their redox potential and assigned to specific mediators.

Electro-fermentation: Sustainable bioproductions steered by electricity

Bernardino Virdis et al.

Summary: The market of biobased products obtained through fermentation processes has been growing steadily due to the demand for a decarbonized economy. However, the economic viability of industrial fermentation is hindered by low product titers and selectivity. Electrofermentation, as an innovative approach, can address these challenges by altering the yield, titer, concentration, or product distribution in traditional fermentation processes. Yet, the molecular and biochemical basis of electrofermentation is still largely unknown.
