Contaminated site-induced health risk using Monte Carlo simulation: evaluation from the brownfield in Beijing, China

Ping Guo et al.

Summary: This study used Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the impact of pollutants on human health at a contaminated site, finding that the main pollutants are within acceptable levels but arsenic and mercury remain major sources of contamination.

Water quality and health risk assessment based on hydrochemical characteristics of tap and large-size bottled water from the main cities and towns in Guanzhong Basin, China

Lin Deng et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of toxic chemicals such as fluoride and arsenic in tap water in the Guanzhong Basin, with fluoride posing unacceptable non-carcinogenic risks for children and arsenic presenting more serious carcinogenic risks than non-carcinogenic risks. In comparison, large-size bottled water has better quality and poses no health risk, making it a suitable alternative to tap water in the area. Measures such as water source alteration and more effective pretreatment should be taken in localities where tap water has potential health risks associated with fluoride and arsenic.

Comprehensive Probabilistic Health Risk Assessment for Exposure to Arsenic and Cadmium in Groundwater

Danrui Sheng et al.

Summary: Probabilistic health risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulation was conducted for arsenic and cadmium exposure through ingestion and dermal contact pathways in groundwater. Results showed varying levels of non-cancer and cancer risks for different age groups, with exposure duration and concentration factor identified as the most influential parameters affecting health risk. The study findings are important for policymakers to understand the actual health risks of heavy metal contamination in groundwater and develop suitable management strategies for safe water supply.

Arsenic exposure from food exceeds that from drinking water in endemic area of Bihar, India

Debapriya Mondal et al.

Summary: This study found that in arsenic-exposed populations in Bihar, India, food contributes almost equally to overall arsenic exposure as drinking water does, even in areas where drinking water arsenic levels exceed the WHO guideline value. These results emphasize the importance of food-related exposure in arsenic-endemic areas, especially in regions with high arsenic concentrations in drinking water.

Hydrogeochemical Processes Affecting Groundwater Chemistry in the Central Part of the Guanzhong Basin, China

Xiaofei Ren et al.

Summary: Groundwater quality in the central part of the Guanzhong Basin, China is mainly controlled by hydrogeochemical processes and anthropogenic pollution. Both mineral dissolution/precipitation and human activities are identified as key factors affecting groundwater quality in this area.
