Apigeninidin-enriched Sorghum bicolor (L. Moench) extracts alleviate Aflatoxin B1-induced dysregulation of male rat hypothalamic-reproductive axis

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: The study found that the API-enriched extract from Sorghum bicolor sheaths has a protective effect against AFB(1)-induced dysfunction of male rat's reproductive system. It improves hormone levels, antioxidant defenses, and reduces inflammation and apoptosis, ultimately leading to improved sperm quality and quantity.

Dual effects of zearalenone on aflatoxin B1-induced liver and mammary gland toxicity in pregnant and lactating rats

Kuntan Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ZEN on AFB1-induced liver and mammary gland toxicity in pregnant and lactating rats. The results showed that co-exposure to AFB1 and ZEN caused inflammation and oxidative stress, inhibited rat growth, and the effects of different doses of ZEN on toxicity varied.

Sex hormones influence the intestinal microbiota composition in mice

Yi Wu et al.

Summary: Sex hormone secretion differences play a significant role in shaping sexually dimorphic traits in animals, impacting the composition of intestinal microbiota. Our study suggests that the intestinal mucosa-associated microbiota is a better indicator of sexual dimorphism in mice, potentially serving as the biological basis for sex-related physiological and pathological differences.

Early Life Exposure to Aflatoxin B1 in Rats: Alterations in Lipids, Hormones, and DNA Methylation among the Offspring

Oluwakemi A. Rotimi et al.

Summary: The study found that prenatal exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in rats resulted in decreased weight, altered lipid and hormone profiles, and changes in DNA methylation, which may impact cancer risk. Further research is needed to determine if these alterations contribute to the development of early-onset hepatocellular carcinoma.

Kuntan Wu et al.

Summary: Aflatoxin can induce cytotoxicity and alter gene expressions in bovine mammary epithelial cells, leading to cell proliferation inhibition, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest. Additionally, AFB(1) and AFM(1) affect RNA methylation modification and gene expression indirectly, providing new insights into their toxicity mechanisms.

Summary: The study analyzed the exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in commonly consumed foods in Serbia, finding that children had the highest exposure levels, raising concerns for their health. The Margin of Exposure (MOE) calculation and estimation of potential hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases revealed low MOE values and a range of possible HCC cases per year based on population groups.

Aflatoxin B1 and Aflatoxin M1 Induce Compromised Intestinal Integrity through Clathrin-Mediated Endocytosis

Yanan Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to both AFB1 and AFM1 has a significant impact on intestinal integrity, affecting serum biochemical parameters, villus height/crypt depth ratio, and distribution of tight junction proteins in mice. In vitro experiments showed that AFB1 and AFM1 individually and in combination can decrease cell viability and increase paracellular permeability in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, AFM1 exacerbated the compromised intestinal barrier induced by AFB1, with evidence suggesting that clathrin-mediated endocytosis may play a role in this process. The study also identified synergistic and additive effects between AFB1 and AFM1, indicating a potential negative impact on human health.

Inflammatory cytokines as key players of apoptosis induced by environmental estrogens in the ovary

Fa-Li Zhang et al.

Summary: Natural and synthetic environmental estrogens have raised concerns due to their potential deleterious effects on human and animal health, particularly on reproduction, by interfering with the body's estrogens. These estrogens may induce various reproductive dysfunctions, with potential pro-and anti-apoptotic effects in the ovary through diverse signaling pathways. Inflammatory factors, particularly tumor necrosis factor, are suggested to be a major cause of apoptosis induction by environmental estrogens in mammalian ovaries, leading to potential strategies for prevention.

Embryonic exposure to low concentrations of aflatoxin B1 triggers global transcriptomic changes, defective yolk lipid mobilization, abnormal gastrointestinal tract development and inflammation in zebrafish

Bence Ivanovics et al.

Summary: The study investigated the direct embryotoxic effects of Aflatoxin B1 in a zebrafish embryo model system through toxicological, transcriptomic, immunological, and biochemical approaches. Exposure to Aflatoxin B1 resulted in significant changes at the transcriptome level, with increased expression of inflammatory genes and repression of genes related to lipid metabolism and gastrointestinal tract development. The effects included neutrophil granulocyte influx, elevated nitric oxide production, yolk lipid accumulation, defective gastrointestinal tract development, and reduced L-arginine level.
