The spectral characteristics and cadmium complexation of soil dissolved organic matter in a wide range of forest lands

Xiaoqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The quality and quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) have a significant impact on the fate of heavy metals. This study analyzed the DOM spectral characteristics of forest soils and the complex capacities between fluorescent DOM components and cadmium (Cd). The results showed that fulvic acid substances exhibited stronger and more stable interactions with Cd than protein-like components.

Biochar mediated uranium immobilization in magnetite rich Cu tailings subject to organic matter amendment and native plant colonization

Yunjia Liu et al.

Summary: Organic matter amendments and plant colonization can accelerate mineral weathering and soil formation in metal mine tailings. However, they may also dissolve uranium-bearing minerals and increase uranium dissolution. This study investigated the solubility and distribution of uranium in amended and plant-colonized tailings, and found that biochar can decrease soluble uranium levels and facilitate uranium immobilization.

Molecular-level composition of dissolved organic matter in distinct trophic states in Chinese lakes: Implications for eutrophic lake management and the global carbon cycle

Shasha Liu et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in aquatic biogeochemical cycles and the global carbon cycle. This study investigates the molecular composition of DOM along a trophic gradient in 11 lakes in China. The results show that DOM from eutrophic lakes is characterized by higher molecular weight, unsaturation degree, abundance of S-containing compounds, and condensed or polycyclic aromatic compounds compared to DOM from oligotrophic lakes. In addition, nutrient input and allochthonous DOM contribute to lake eutrophication and the release of autochthonous DOM. This research provides valuable insights for future studies on DOM dynamics in eutrophic lakes.

High molecular weight fractions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) determined the adsorption and electron transfer capacity of DOM on iron minerals

Yuanhang Li et al.

Summary: By investigating the effects of different MW fractions of DOM on the adsorption onto Fe minerals and Fe reduction process, it was found that oxygen-rich H-DOM played a key role in both processes. The functional groups of oxygen-rich DOM were more favorable for adsorption onto Fe minerals and significantly enhanced the Fe reduction capacity.

Effects of pyrolysis temperature on proton and cadmium binding properties onto biochar-derived dissolved organic matter: Roles of fluorophore and chromophore

Mei Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmental behavior of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM). The results showed that the humic-like fluorophores in BDOM had higher binding affinity for Cd compared to the protein-like fluorophores. The quenching effects of Cd on the protein-like components increased significantly with the pyrolysis temperature. The carboxylic-like and phenolic-like chromophores in BDOM were involved in the binding process of protons and Cd. These findings contribute to our understanding of the application potential of biochar in heavy metal polluted soil.

Cadmium immobilization in lake sediment using different crystallographic manganese oxides: Performance and mechanism

Changsheng Jin et al.

Summary: Cd immobilization in lake sediment was effectively achieved by using Mn oxides as amendments. The treatment with synthesized Mn oxides significantly reduced the leachable and extractable Cd in the sediment, and transformed the acid-soluble fraction of Cd to a residual fraction. The pH and oxidation-reduction potential of the sediment played important roles in the bioavailability of Cd during the remediation process. The interaction between the amendment and Cd mainly involved complexation, ion-exchange, and precipitation. These findings provide insights and methods for the improved restoration of heavy metal-contaminated sediment.

A biochar supported magnetic metal organic framework for the removal of trivalent antimony

Guocheng Zhu et al.

Summary: A recyclable magnetic MOF nanoparticle phase was prepared using waste biomass-derived biochar to support the treatment of aqueous antimony pollution. The adsorption of trivalent antimony onto the prepared BSMU showed higher sorption capacity under alkaline conditions, with no significant negative effects from coexisting ions. The adsorption followed a pseudo second order kinetics model and Freundlich isotherm model, indicating a fast and efficient absorption process.

Musong Chen et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and metal pollution are global environmental issues. This study investigated the mobility of cadmium in sediments from Lake Taihu and found that the sudden outbreak of cadmium pollution in May and June was due to the complexation of dissolved organic matter with cadmium in sediments. The research highlights the risk of sudden cadmium pollution events in eutrophic lakes.
