Trace elements in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) in China: Spatiotemporal variation and human health implications

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The enrichment and health risk assessment of trace elements in crayfish on a national scale are vital for food safety in China due to the increasing consumption. This study explored the variation characteristics of trace elements in crayfish using 4709 samples from databases. Regional differences in trace element levels were found due to variations in background values. The promotion of intensive rice-crayfish coculture in China resulted in increased levels of As and Cr in crayfish.

Long-Term Ammonia Toxicity in the Hepatopancreas of Swimming Crab Portunus trituberculatus: Cellular Stress Response and Tissue Damage

Yunliang Lu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in histology, cellular stress responses, and apoptosis in the hepatopancreas of the swimming crab under ammonia stress. The results showed that long-term exposure to high concentrations of ammonia resulted in severe damage to the hepatopancreas and inhibited cellular stress responses. The study also found that after recovery, the expression of many genes involved in cellular responses still differed significantly from the control group.

Comprehensive assessment of integrated rice-crayfish farming system as a new paradigm to air-water-food nexus sustainability

Qiaoyu Sun et al.

Summary: Integrated rice-crayfish farming (IRCF) is a popular agricultural production mode that has rapidly expanded in China. Despite the potential for increased income for farmers, there are also environmental and food security risks associated with IRCF expansion. Strict measures and rational land use planning are needed to ensure the sustainable development of IRCF.

Distinct vulnerability to oxidative stress determines the ammonia sensitivity of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) at different developmental stages

Wang Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects and mechanisms of ammonia on red swamp crayfish at two different developmental stages. The findings revealed that ammonia exposure caused severe hepatopancreatic injury and impaired antioxidant capacity. Additionally, it was observed that crayfish at a later developmental stage exhibited stronger antioxidant and detoxification capacities, enabling quicker recovery after ammonia exposure.

High feeding level alters physiological status but does not improve feed conversion efficiency and growth performance of juvenile red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852)

Si Luo et al.

Summary: The aquaculture of red swamp crayfish has grown rapidly in recent years, but limited knowledge on the physiological responses to different feeding levels has hindered scientific feeding strategies. This study found that different feeding levels affected the growth performance and feed utilization of juvenile P. clarkii. Physiological variables were significantly correlated with feeding levels, with high feeding levels leading to oxidative stress in crayfish. High feeding levels (6% BW day(-1)) did not benefit P. clarkii.

Toxic Effects on Bioaccumulation, Hematological Parameters, Oxidative Stress, Immune Responses and Tissue Structure in Fish Exposed to Ammonia Nitrogen: A Review

Zhenkun Xu et al.

Summary: Ammonia nitrogen is a common environmental limiting factor in aquaculture that can accumulate rapidly in water, reaching toxic concentrations and affecting fish health through oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, tissue damage, and immune response. Fish, as top predators in aquatic ecosystems, are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of high levels of ammonia nitrogen exposure, which can lead to bioaccumulation in certain tissues and disrupt hematological properties, antioxidant balance, and immune response, ultimately causing oxidative damage and neurotoxicity.

Effect of dietary sodium butyrate on the innate immune response of Procambarus clarkii and disease resistance against white spot syndrome virus

Chongyang Xiao et al.

Summary: The study found that sodium butyrate can effectively enhance the resistance of crayfish to White spot syndrome virus, reduce mortality, promote the expression of immune-related genes, increase the activity of immune indicators, and reduce the rate of cell apoptosis.

Effects of ammonia exposure on oxidative stress, immune enzyme activities, and intestinal microbiota of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Huirong Lv et al.

Summary: An experiment on ammonia stress was conducted to study the effects on the antioxidant and immunological enzyme activities, as well as the changes in intestinal microbiota richness and diversity of Litopenaeus vannamei. The findings suggest that exposure to ammonia suppressed the antioxidant and immunological defenses, and induced changes in the intestinal microbiota composition.

Assessment of essential element accumulation in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) and the highly efficient selenium enrichment in freshwater animals

Guohui Peng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the accumulation of trace elements in different parts of red swamp crayfish from different regions in China. It was found that the concentrations of copper and selenium in the abdominal muscles of crayfish from certain regions were significantly higher than those from other regions. Additionally, there was a significant positive correlation between the concentrations of copper and selenium in crayfish and those in the environment. Selenium could specifically enrich in crayfish, and consuming the abdominal muscles of crayfish does not result in the overdose of essential elements.
