Seasonal disconnects between saprobic and mycorrhizal sporocarp communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains

Shawn P. Brown et al.

Summary: This study conducted multi-year interseasonal investigations on fungal sporocarps in the southern Appalachian Mountains of the United States, revealing a temporal disconnect between saprobic and ectomycorrhizal taxa, as well as increased community variability across the growing season. Additionally, the occurrences of individual taxa in different seasons were examined, along with co-occurrence patterns between taxa and guilds.

Impacts of climate change on reproductive phenology in tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia

Shinya Numata et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed reproductive phenology in Peninsular Malaysia and found a decrease in the proportion of flowering and fruiting species over the past few decades. We also discovered that species in the Dipterocarpaceae family have flowering responses to both drought and low temperatures, but the availability of low-temperature flowering cues will decrease in the future, leading to reduced flowering opportunities for these species.

New directions in tropical phenology

Charles C. Davis et al.

Summary: The phenology of tropical plants, which are found in Earth's most diverse biomes, is still not well understood. However, the use of digitized herbarium data, circular statistical distributions, and phylogenetic information can provide new insights into how tropical plants respond to climate.

European mushroom assemblages are phylogenetically structured by temperature

Claus Baessler et al.

Summary: Recent global warming affects species compositions at an unprecedented rate. It is crucial to understand the link between species occurrence and climate in order to predict climate-induced changes in species assemblages. This study examines the correlation between macrofungal fruit body assemblages and thermal environments in Europe, and finds that macrofungal communities are phylogenetically structured by warm and cold environments.

Observed and projected changes in global climate zones based on Koppen climate classification

Diyang Cui et al.

Summary: The review article provides a comprehensive insight into changes in global Koppen climate zones, summarizing advancements and limitations of climate zone definitions and assessing available climate classification map products. Recent detection and assessment studies on observed and projected climate zone changes are reviewed, with findings indicating far-reaching impacts on ecological systems under global warming. Model uncertainties make the detectability of significant climate zone changes through observations and projections, the rate and time of the changes, and their causes remain unclear.

Global analysis reveals an environmentally driven latitudinal pattern in mushroom size across fungal species

Claus Baessler et al.

Summary: The study found that the size of fungal fruit bodies is related to latitude, resource availability, and temperature, with larger fruit bodies often found in areas with high seasonality and moderate temperatures. Both mutualistic species and saprotrophs exhibited similar responses to the environment, showing a strategy to avoid temperature stress.

Sergei Polme et al.

Summary: The article introduces a database FungalTraits to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of fungi, discussing the challenges between molecular identification of fungal diversity and knowledge of functional traits. Through the involvement of expert knowledge and tools, researchers reannotated a large number of fungal and Stramenopila genera, summarizing them into 17 lifestyle-related traits suitable for environmental studies.
