Harvesting can stabilise population fluctuations and buffer the impacts of extreme climatic events

Bart Peeters et al.

Summary: The impacts of harvesting on population dynamics depend on the type and strength of density-dependent regulation. Low to moderate harvesting can buffer populations against environmental perturbations by reducing their impacts through density-dependent environmental stochasticity and intra-specific resource competition. This study suggests that low to moderate harvesting may enhance population resistance to climate variability and extreme weather.

Population responses to harvesting in fluctuating environments

Aline Magdalena Lee et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent research on the effects of spatial patterns and interspecific interactions on harvesting, highlighting the impacts on dynamics and resilience of both harvested and non-harvested populations and species. The findings suggest that harvesting can affect the spatial synchrony of population fluctuations and amplify environmentally induced population fluctuations through selective harvesting and biased population structure.

Chaos is not rare in natural ecosystems

Tanya Rogers et al.

Summary: Previous studies have suggested that chaotic dynamics are rare in natural populations, but this research using new methods and more time series reveals that 30% of population time series exhibit chaotic behavior. Chaotic dynamics are more prevalent among plankton and insects, while birds and mammals show the least chaotic behavior. Lyapunov exponents decrease with generation time and scale with body mass to the power of -1/6 in chaotic populations.

A macroecological perspective on the fluctuations of exploited fish populations

A. M. Segura et al.

Summary: This study proposed a macroscopic approach combining the size-density relationship and Taylor's law to predict the temporal variance of exploited and unexploited fish populations. The variability of targeted fish populations was 2 orders of magnitude greater than that of non-targeted fish populations, solely explained by their higher relative abundance rather than their specific trophic position. This approach is useful in predicting fish variability and fishing effect in the whole community, especially in cases where specific details of the interacting species are lacking.
