Climate change as the dominant driver of recent ecological changes in a semi-arid alpine lake from the Chinese Loess Plateau

Xinwei Yan et al.

Summary: The ecological changes in semi-arid alpine lakes in northern China are mainly driven by climate fluctuations, extreme precipitation events, and changes in East Asian Summer Monsoon intensity. Despite recent decades of intensified human disturbances, climate's leading role in driving ecological change over the past two centuries is evident.

Assessment of land-use dynamics of the Aravalli range (India) using integrated geospatial and CART approach

Alok Raj et al.

Summary: Using remote sensing and machine learning approaches, this study assessed the land-use dynamics in the Aravalli range from 1975 to 2059, revealing a significant decrease in forest land and a future trend of conversion to settlement areas. These human interventions threaten ecological balance and hinder the progress towards Sustainable Development Goals.

Pastoral community's vulnerability under extreme floodings accelerated by rangeland degradation among Turkmen transhumant, Northern Iran

Mojgansadat Azimi et al.

Summary: This study assesses the vulnerability of Indigenous Turkmen pastoralists in Northern Iran to flood disasters. The findings indicate that road networks and livestock are the most affected components of the rangeland ecosystems in floods. Additionally, the economy of pastoral families is heavily impacted in terms of supplementary feeding, watering costs, and forage quantity. Overgrazing, climate change, drought, and water shortages are identified as the main factors contributing to rangeland degradation. Proper management of rangelands and building pastoral family resilience require attention from national-level nature conservationists and management organizations.

Assessing Rangeland Sensitivity to Degradation in North Tibet

Cheng Duan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess rangeland degradation in North Tibet using an environmentally sensitive area index (ESAI) and identify the major drivers of degradation. The results showed that 33% of the study area was susceptive to rangeland degradation, with alpine desert-steppes in the west being the most sensitive areas. Vegetation cover type, grazing intensity, and aridity were found to be the most important factors contributing to rangeland degradation.

Xingguang Yan et al.

Summary: With the growth of cloud computing, the use of the Google Earth Engine platform for research based on Landsat images has become increasingly popular. This study focuses on the NDWI and MNDWI of the Yucatan Peninsula coastline from 1993 to 2021. The results show that the restored Landsat images provide improved results for studying water bodies and have a high correlation with Sentinel-2 data.
