Identifying ecosystem service bundles and the spatiotemporal characteristics of trade-offs and synergies in coal mining areas with a high groundwater table

Sucui Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatiotemporal characteristics of interactions among ecosystem services (ESs) is important for maintaining human well-being and achieving sustainable regional development. This study examines the coal mining areas with a high groundwater table (CMA-HGT) in Huainan to identify ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) and explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of trade-offs/synergies among ESs at different grid scales and ESBs. The results demonstrate that trade-offs are generally observed among provisioning services, while synergies are generally found between regulation and maintenance services. The findings highlight the regional heterogeneity and scale dependence of the interactions among ESs, providing valuable guidelines for ecosystem management and restoration programs.

Quantifying impacts of climate dynamics and land-use changes on water yield service in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China

Hongwei Pei et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the trends and drivers of annual water yield service (WYs) in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China over the past 20 years. The results showed that climate and land-use changes were responsible for the variations in WYs, with afforestation leading to a decrease in WYs compared to nonafforestation areas. Future scenarios of revegetation indicated a potential shrinkage in WYs provision. The study emphasizes the need to carefully assess the impacts of afforestation on both bluewater and green water.

Climate change versus land-use change-What affects the ecosystem services more in the forest-steppe ecotone?

Fengqi Cui et al.

Summary: This study conducted comprehensive simulation experiments on ecosystem services (ESs) changes in the forest-steppe ecotone, finding that different types of land-use changes and climate change have varying impacts on ESs, with water yield being most affected by temperature, precipitation, radiation, and wind speed.

Gray Forecast of Ecosystem Services Value and Its Driving Forces in Karst Areas of China: A Case Study in Guizhou Province, China

Sipei Pan et al.

Summary: A sound ecosystem is crucial for sustainable development of human society, with the karst ecosystem being an essential component. The study in Guizhou Province reveals a significant loss in ESV from 2009 to 2018, with total ESV expected to decrease to 218.71 billion CNY by 2030. Gray correlation analysis highlights population and tertiary industry as key driving factors affecting ESV change.

The 30 m annual land cover dataset and its dynamics in China from 1990 to 2019

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: Land cover (LC) plays a crucial role in energy exchange and environmental impact. Rapid changes in land cover in China necessitate fine-scale monitoring. A new dataset, CLCD, based on Landsat data on the Google Earth Engine platform provides valuable insights into China's land cover dynamics from 1990 to 2019.
