Improving soil organic carbon predictions from a Sentinel-2 soil composite by assessing surface conditions and uncertainties

Klara Dvorakova et al.

Summary: The use of reflectance composites from multiple time series satellite images can improve soil organic carbon (SOC) prediction by mitigating the influence of surface disturbance factors. However, it is uncertain whether these composites accurately reflect the conditions necessary for predicting topsoil properties. In this study, a composite reflectance spectra were constructed from photos and Sentinel-2 imagery, and used to predict SOC content, showing promising accuracy in prediction.

Evaluating indices of soil organic carbon stability. A case study for forest restoration projects near Beijing, China

Zeyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compared the stability indices of soil organic carbon (SOC) in different plantation forest combinations in a sub-humid area close to a mega-urban area. The results showed inconsistencies among the six SOC stability indices. The contribution rates of different indices to SOC varied among the different plantations, suggesting that a combination of indices and knowledge of soil and vegetation types are needed for assessing SOC stability.

Digital mapping of soil organic carbon density using newly developed bare soil spectral indices and deep neural network

Qian Liu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the digital soil mapping of Soil Organic Carbon Density (SOCD) in agricultural land using different spectral data, including laboratory, airborne, and Sentinel 2 spectra. The results show that laboratory spectra perform the best in SOCD prediction, followed by airborne and Sentinel 2 spectra. The study also compared the performance of bare soil spectral indices (BSSIs) and vegetation indices (VIs) in SOCD prediction and found that BSSIs have higher accuracy. Among the three prediction models used, the deep neural network (DNN) model shows the best performance in digital soil mapping of SOCD.

Improving the quantification of sediment source contributions using different mathematical models and spectral preprocessing techniques for individual or combined spectra of ultraviolet-visible, near- and middle-infrared spectroscopy

Tales Tiecher et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of PLSR and SVM in estimating sediment source contributions, the impact of different spectral preprocessing techniques, and the influence of UV-Vis, NIR, and MIR regions on the results. The combination of UV-Vis, NIR, MIR bands with spectral preprocessing techniques showed significant improvements in model accuracy, highlighting the potential of spectroscopy as an alternative to conventional geochemical approaches in discerning sediment sources in agricultural catchments in subtropical regions.

Regional suitability prediction of soil salinization based on remote-sensing derivatives and optimal spectral index

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: Soil salinization is a serious issue in arid and semi-arid regions, hindering agricultural development and food security. This study compared the capabilities of Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2A MSI in remote sensing prediction of soil salinity, finding that Sentinel data performed best under first-order derivatives for predicting salinized soils.

Simple method for extracting the seasonal signals of photochemical reflectance index and normalized difference vegetation index measured using a spectral reflectance sensor

Jae-Hyun RYU et al.

Summary: A spectral reflectance sensor (SRS) was developed to monitor seasonal changes in crops by extracting seasonal signals with a novel filtering method and using sunshine duration to exclude distorted values of vegetation indices. The method improved the seasonal signals of vegetation indices by increasing R2 values on three crops, contributing to agricultural monitoring system by identifying seasonal changes in crop growth and physiological conditions.
