Understanding human influence on climate change in China

Ying Sun et al.

Summary: China's climate has been warming since the 1950s, with human activities, primarily greenhouse gas emissions, driving the increases in mean and extreme temperatures. The impact of human influence on precipitation is also emerging.

Roles of dam and climate change in thermal regime alteration of a large river

Zijun Xiao et al.

Summary: The water temperature in the mainstream of the Yangtze River has undergone significant changes due to climate change and the operation of large dams. By building a physics-based model, the study quantifies the respective impacts of the Three Gorges Dam, cascade dams, and climate change on riverine water temperature variations. It is found that the river has experienced a warming trend in the past three decades, with 44%-80% of the warming attributed to climate change. The dams have caused a significant seasonal thermal lag and alterations in monthly water temperature.

Multi-scale variability of hydrothermal regime based on wavelet analysis-The middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China

Wenxian Guo et al.

Summary: Water temperature is a crucial factor in riverine ecosystems, and this study examines its dynamics and impact on the reproduction of Four Major Chinese Carp in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. By analyzing 62 years of water temperature data, it was found that the water temperature at Yichang Station has a complex multi-scale structure. The study also highlights the influence of the Three Gorges Dam on water temperature changes and the breeding period of the fish species.

Dam-influenced seasonally varying water temperature in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: Water temperature in aquatic systems is influenced by dams, leading to a lag in seasonal temperature changes. A composite cosine function is proposed to better describe the dam-influenced seasonal temperature pattern. In the Three Gorges Reservoir, asymmetric seasonal temperature processes were observed with annual and semi-annual components contributing significantly to the time varying water temperature.

Longitudinal transport timescales in a large dammed river - The Changjiang River

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water age and residence time in the Yangtze River from upstream to downstream of the Three Gorges Dam, revealing that the presence of the dam significantly increases water age. Downstream of the dam, the longitudinal aging rate of water becomes discordant in an annual cycle, and the replenished discharge in dry season accelerates water transport.
