Including imprecisely georeferenced specimens improves accuracy of species distribution models and estimates of niche breadth

Adam B. Smith et al.

Summary: This article introduces two methods for using imprecise georeferenced occurrences in biogeographical analysis. These methods assign imprecise records to the closest locations or climates to the geographical or environmental centroid of precise records. Results show that including imprecise records improves the accuracy of ecological niche models and estimates of niche breadth and extent of occurrence.

Scale mismatches between predictor and response variables in species distribution modelling: A review of practices for appropriate grain selection

Vitezslav Moudry et al.

Summary: There is a lack of guidance on selecting the spatial grain of predictor and response variables in species distribution models (SDM). This review summarizes the current state of research on the effects of changing variable resolution, multi-grain vs single-grain analysis, and land cover type on model performance. The study found that coarsening the response variable resolution generally leads to poorer model performance, and suggests aiming for finer resolutions unless expert knowledge dictates otherwise. It also highlights the need for reporting the resolution of all predictor and response variables.

Importance of data selection and filtering in species distribution models: A case study on the Cantabrian brown bear

Summary: Species distribution models are powerful tools in ecology and conservation, but choosing the right input data and accounting for biases are crucial. In this study, we found that limited data availability and poor selection of environmental variables can lead to inaccurate predictions.

Positional errors in species distribution modelling are not overcome by the coarser grains of analysis

Summary: The performance of species distribution models (SDMs) is affected by analysis grain and positional error of species occurrences. Coarsening the analysis grain to compensate for positional error does not improve model performance.

Using maps of biogeographical ignorance to reveal the uncertainty in distributional data hidden in species distribution models

Geiziane Tessarolo et al.

Summary: Species distribution models are limited by uncertainties in distributional data, and the proposed methodology in this study aims to address these limitations by developing tools to analyze data-driven uncertainties. By applying this approach to Scarabaeidae dung beetles in Iberia, it was found that data-driven uncertainties are widespread and can be visualized through ignorance maps combined with SDM predictions, highlighting the importance of considering uncertainty in SDM applications.

Can habitat suitability estimated from MaxEnt predict colonizations and extinctions?

Simon Venne et al.

Summary: MaxEnt models are used to model species' geographic distributions and predict changes in response to environmental change. This study tested the predictive ability of MaxEnt models by modeling colonizations and extinctions of bird species in North America. The results show that habitat suitability and neighbourhood occupancy have a significant impact on colonization and extinction probabilities, with neighbourhood occupancy being a better predictor of changes in occupancy over short and medium time scales compared to changes in climatic habitat suitability characterized by MaxEnt.

Continental-scale 1 km hummingbird diversity derived from fusing point records with lateral and elevational expert information

Diego Ellis-Soto et al.

Summary: The study presents a model-based approach that integrates expert elevation information with range maps and point occurrences to improve high-resolution distribution predictions for species, especially data-poor ones, with significant improvements in model performance. By stacking species distribution model outputs, a hemispheric map of predicted hummingbird species richness at 1 km resolution was produced, highlighting southwest Colombia as a richness hotspot. This integrated approach enhances biodiversity research by reducing false presences and overestimates of species richness.

Creating virtual species to test species distribution models: the importance of landscape structure, dispersal and population processes

Liam Grimmett et al.

Summary: The use of virtual species in testing species distribution models is crucial for understanding how model development processes affect model performance. Comparisons between probabilistic simulation methods and those incorporating endogenous processes reveal the importance of considering population dynamics and dispersal when simulating virtual species, especially across landscapes with varying spatial structures.

Comparing sample bias correction methods for species distribution modeling using virtual species

Richard Inman et al.

Summary: The assumption of unbiased sampling in species distribution modeling with presence-background methods is often not met when relying on museum records, leading to inherent sampling bias. Three correction methods have varying effectiveness in accounting for this bias, with FactorBiasOut generally showing the greatest improvement in recreating known distributions but not necessarily performing better in identifying environmental covariates or species-environment relationships compared to G-Filter or E-Filter methods. Biased calibration datasets can pose challenges, particularly for narrow niche species.

Defining critical habitat for plant species with poor occurrence knowledge and identification of critical habitat networks

Sergei Volis et al.

Summary: By applying spatial distribution and reserve selection modeling, critical habitat networks for 50 critically endangered plant species in Uzbekistan were identified. The extent of predicted critical habitat varied greatly among species and indicated whether rarity was inherent or caused by anthropogenic activity, guiding conservation strategies. Recommendations were made to add new areas to the existing protected area network, prioritizing territories with high numbers of imperiled species, concentrated in the eastern part of Uzbekistan.

Summary: This study used presence-only species distribution models to predict the habitat suitability of baleen whales in the Southern Ocean, highlighting the importance of sea ice concentration and distance to the ice edge as key predictors. The results suggest that presence-only models can be a cost-effective tool in the marine realm, particularly for studying the distribution of migratory whale species.

Summary: Estimating local suitability with species distribution models (SDMs) can indicate the maximum abundance attainable by species, but the abundance-suitability relationship is typically wedge-shaped.
