Global patterns and drivers of beta diversity facets of reef fish faunas

Melina F. Maxwell et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the patterns and drivers of multiple facets of beta diversity and its components in reef fish assemblages. The results showed that past climate changes and historical contingency influenced the composition of tropical reef fish assemblages today.

Why the Mixed Layer Depth Matters When Diagnosing Marine Heatwave Drivers Using a Heat Budget Approach

Youstina Elzahaby et al.

Summary: Marine heatwaves, extreme warming events that can cause significant damage to marine ecosystems and local economies, are analyzed in this study. The researchers found that the chosen depth of the surface mixed layer directly affects the identification of dominant drivers of heatwaves. Underestimating the SML depth amplifies the air-sea heatflux term, while overestimating it dampens this term. The classification of heatwave drivers is also influenced by the choice of SML depth, with deeper estimates resulting in more classification as advection-driven and shallower estimates producing the opposite pattern during cool months.

Life-history traits, geographical range, and conservation aspects of reef fishes from the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific

Juan Pablo Quimbayo et al.

Summary: Reef fish represent one of the most diverse vertebrate groups on Earth, with the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific realms hosting unique and relatively less species-rich fish assemblages. The new database contains life-history traits, biogeographical and conservation aspects of 2,198 reef fish species in these realms, offering opportunities for ecological and evolutionary research and species conservation efforts.

On the Interpretations of Joint Modeling in Community Ecology

Giovanni Poggiato et al.

Summary: This article explores the mathematical links between species distribution models (SDMs) and joint species distribution models (JSDMs), emphasizing that both models are unable to separate environmental effects from biotic interactions. The authors provide a guide to help determine when JSDMs are preferable to SDMs for species community modeling. Ultimately, the article calls for a better understanding and adoption of novel statistical developments in biodiversity modeling.

Environmental filter drives the taxonomic and functional β-diversity of zooplankton in tropical shallow lakes

Leidiane Pereira Diniz et al.

Summary: The study found that despite significant compositional differences in different regions, taxonomic and functional beta-diversity of zooplankton did not differ between the two regions. Taxonomic and functional beta-diversity were mainly driven by environmental factors, indicating the dominance of niche assembly.

Summertime increases in upper-ocean stratification and mixed-layer depth

Jean-Baptiste Sallee et al.

Summary: The study shows that from 1970 to 2018, the density contrast across the base of the mixed layer in the world ocean increased and the mixed layer itself became deeper. The changes indicate a possible shift in the mixed layer during an era of global climate change, although important uncertainties remain.

Potential changes in the connectivity of marine protected areas driven by extreme ocean warming

Luciana Shigihara Lima et al.

Summary: This study simulated the regional effects of climate change on the demographic connectivity of parrotfishes in nine MPAs in the South Atlantic, showing that a tropicalization scenario will influence the connectivity and functional integrity of MPAs with the increase in sea surface temperature and changes in surface currents.

Mechanisms of dispersal and establishment drive a stepping stone community assembly on seamounts and oceanic islands

Eric F. Mazzei et al.

Summary: The mechanisms driving the ecology and biodiversity of seamount communities remain unclear, but research suggests that habitat heterogeneity, shallowest depth, and distance from the mainland may be key factors influencing species distribution and site similarity.

Phylogenetic conservatism drives nutrient dynamics of coral reef fishes

Jacob E. Allgeier et al.

Summary: The study examines fish stoichiometry traits in coral reefs and finds that phylogeny plays a critical role in nutrient cycling, especially in the Caribbean region. In Polynesia, ecological factors have a greater influence on chemical trait variation. Regional differences in chemical traits can be explained by nutrient limitation associated with different geological contexts.
