The periotic of a basal balaenopterid from the Tortonian of the Stirone River, northern Italy (Cetacea, Mysticeti, Balaenopteridae)

Michelangelo Bisconti et al.

Summary: A new periotic (MuMAB 240508) from the Tortonian of the Stirone River, Northern Italy is described and compared to known periotics of balaenopterid species. The specimen shows balaenopterid characters and may belong to an undescribed balaenopterid species. The total body length of the individual to which MuMAB 240508 belonged to was reconstructed and found to be approximately 14.4 m, indicating an earlier origin of large size in balaenopterid mysticetes.

The Andes through time: evolution and distribution of Andean floras

Oscar Alejandro Perez-Escobar et al.

Summary: This study provides a synthesis of the vascular plant diversity in the Andes and reveals that the Northern Andean mid-elevation cloud forests are the most species-rich ecosystems. The Andes play a crucial role as a source and sink of Neotropical plant diversity, and there have been significant biotic interchanges between the Andes, Amazonia, and other Neotropical biomes throughout history.

Lateral palatal foramina do not indicate baleen in fossil whales

Carlos Mauricio Peredo et al.

Summary: This study examines the lateral palatal foramina in different species of cetaceans and terrestrial artiodactyls, finding consistent internal morphology across observed taxa. It suggests that the lateral palatal foramina observed in extant mysticetes are homologous to those of terrestrial artiodactyls, indicating that these structures are not unique predictors for the presence of baleen in fossil whales, and are likely associated with gingiva or other oral tissue.

Late Neogene evolution of modern deep-dwelling plankton

Flavia Boscolo-Galazzo et al.

Summary: The fossil record of marine microplankton provides insights into the evolutionary drivers behind the origin of modern deep-water plankton. Research over the past 15 million years shows that global cooling and increased efficiency of the biological pump have favored the evolution of deep-water organisms.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive and quantitative estimate of global temperature changes over the past 540 million years, combining various paleoclimate indicators. The global temperature model includes estimates of global average temperature, tropical temperatures, deep ocean temperatures, and polar temperatures. The history of global temperature changes has been summarized into 8 major climate modes, each consisting of warming and cooling episodes influenced by geological processes.

Provenance Shifts During Neogene Brahmaputra Delta Progradation Tied to Coupled Climate and Tectonic Change in the Eastern Himalaya

Paul M. Betka et al.

Summary: This study uses detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions to correlate the formations of the Indo-Burman Ranges with equivalent strata in the Bengal Basin. It reveals the early Miocene arrival of the ancestral Brahmaputra delta to the region and the changing sources of sediment through time. Additionally, it suggests that the Miocene progradation of the delta reflects increasing rates of erosion and sea level fall during intensification of the South Asian Monsoon.

Baleen whale prey consumption based on high-resolution foraging measurements

Matthew S. Savoca et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the consumption of krill by whales is much larger than previously thought, with some ecosystems underestimating it by threefold or more. By using 3D whale locations and acoustic measurements of prey density, researchers were able to calculate the prey consumption at daily to annual scales, revealing the significant impact of baleen whales on ecosystem function and nutrient recycling. This suggests that the recovery of baleen whales and their nutrient recycling services could potentially enhance productivity and restore lost ecosystem function caused by 20th century whaling.

Central volcanoes and caldera collapses in the late Miocene-Late Pleistocene Tibesti Volcanic Province, northwest Chad

Abdelsalam Elshaafi et al.

Summary: The Tibesti Volcanic Province (TVP) in northwest Chad is the second largest of the five Gharyan-Tibesti volcanic provinces, with differences in volcano-tectonic processes, eruption style, and volcanic material production compared to the other four provinces in Libya. The evolution of TVP from late Miocene to late Pleistocene involved the formation of central volcanoes and later caldera collapses leading to large-volume ignimbrites. The volcanic products of TVP suggest a double magma source, with basaltic magmas coming from a deeper reservoir and rhyolite from a shallow crustal magma chamber, while the Libyan provinces primarily produce basalts from single deep reservoirs.

The rise to dominance of lanternfishes (Teleostei: Myctophidae) in the oceanic ecosystems: a paleontological perspective

Werner Schwarzhans et al.

Summary: Lanternfishes are currently dominant in terms of abundance, biomass, and diversity among mesopelagic fishes. A transition in otolith size during the early Oligocene is related to changes in oceanic circulation and deep ocean cooling. The increase in diatom abundance appears to be linked to the rise in myctophid diversity and size in the late Miocene.

Phylogenetic sampling affects evolutionary patterns of morphological disparity

Thomas J. Smith et al.

Summary: Cladistic character matrices are often used in analyses of morphological disparity, but their sampling may lead to biases in morphospace occupation. Differences in tree shape can predict genuine differences in morphospace occupation, cautioning against uncritical repurposing of cladistic datasets in disparity analyses. Uniformity in lineage sampling across time and topology is important for distinguishing evolutionary phenomena from artefactual signals.
