A Paradigm Shift: North China Craton's North Margin Orogen Is the Collisional Suture With the Columbia Supercontinent

Timothy M. Kusky et al.

Summary: In a comprehensive study of the North Margin Orogen of the North China Craton, it is shown that the older rocks in this region have preserved evidence of active margin magmatism, collisional tectonics, and granulite facies metamorphism. This study supports the idea that the North China Craton amalgamated during accretionary orogenesis and that the 1.85 Ga high-grade metamorphism is craton-wide in scale. This new understanding has implications for reconstructing Earth's early supercontinents and for mineral resource exploration.

Alpine-style tectonic nappe stacking in an Archean suture zone: Quantitative structural profile places constraints on orogenic architecture

Yating Zhong et al.

Summary: This study reports on the structural geometry and stacking sequence of an Archean Alpine-style sub-horizontal fold/thrust nappe pile in northern China, providing a quantitative basis for studying the tectonism style during Archean orogenesis. The nappe pile is subdivided into different nappes with major ductile shear zones at their bases, and they originated from different tectonic belts of an ancient paleo-ocean before being emplaced. The study reveals similarities between the Archean Zanhuang nappes and other orogenic belts, supporting the existence of horizontal plate tectonics in the Archean.

Passive margins in accreting Archaean archipelagos signal continental stability promoting early atmospheric oxygen rise

Yaying Peng et al.

Summary: This study reports a Neoarchaean passive-margin-type sequence from the Precambrian basement of China, revealing significant changes in tectonic style and climate during continental growth and emergence, and the initiation of the Great Oxidation Event. The post-collisional subsidence of the archipelago margins provides a new stable niche, indicating the initial continental maturity and foreshadowing major changes at the Archaean-Proterozoic boundary.

Ultrahigh-pressure peridotites record Neoarchean collisional tectonics

Zhenzhu Wu et al.

Summary: This study reports on Archean ultrahigh-pressure peridotites in North China, providing direct evidence for the operation of continental collisional plate tectonics since at least 2.5 billion years ago. The peridotites are believed to be tectonic slivers of a collisional complex that were subducted to mantle depths and then exhumed to crustal levels during Neoarchean subduction and subsequent arc/continental collision.

Growth of continental crust in intra-oceanic and continental-margin arc systems: Analogs for Archean systems

Timothy Kusky et al.

Summary: The continental crust of Earth has grown and been recycled along convergent plate margins throughout geological history. This growth mainly occurs in intra-oceanic and continental-margin arc systems in Archean time, suggesting that early continental crust may have formed largely by the amalgamation of multiple arc systems. This indicates that plate tectonic processes characterized by subduction and arc magmatism have been in operation since the Eoarchean, shaping the geologic record.

Coexisting divergent and convergent plate boundary assemblages indicate plate tectonics in the Neoarchean

Bo Huang et al.

Summary: This study provides new evidence for plate tectonics 2.55-2.51 billion years ago by reporting the coexistence of Neoarchean divergent and convergent plate boundary rock assemblages. The findings suggest that the subduction zone during that time was warmer than average. The results also indicate lateral plate motions in the late Neoarchean and the possible operation of plate tectonics, albeit with higher subduction geotherms than in the Phanerozoic. Plate tectonic processes likely played an important role in shaping Earth's surficial environments during the Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic.

Summary: The debate over whether modern-style plate tectonics existed on early Earth is based on a lack of clear evidence in the Archean geological record. However, recent findings in China's Precambrian basement provide strong evidence for horizontal plate tectonics dating back over 2.7 billion years ago, demonstrating the existence of plate tectonics during the Archean Eon when life first emerged on Earth.

Slab Temperature Evolution Over the Lifetime of a Subduction Zone

A. F. Holt et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the thermal structure of subducting slabs varies at different stages of subduction due to time-dependent subduction properties and inherited thermal structures. Slabs experience rapid cooling during initiation, followed by slower cooling, with additional cooling during the free sinking phase at the Moho. The findings suggest that the variability in recorded exhumed rocks may have dynamic origins and that varying subduction conditions challenge kinematically driven models with constant parameters.

Burial, Accretion, and Exhumation of the Metamorphic Sole of the Oman-UAE Ophiolite

T. K. Ambrose et al.

Summary: The petrological analyses conducted on samples from the metamorphic sole of the Oman-United Arab Emirates ophiolite revealed peak pressure-temperature conditions of 700-900 degrees C and 10-12 kbar at depths of 30-40 km. Lower structural levels showed similar pressures but temperatures about 100 degrees C lower. The progression from granulite to amphibolite and greenschist facies and the subsequent underplating of lower-grade thrust slices released fluids that hydrated the overlying granulites and hanging-wall peridotites. These results suggest that the sole was exhumed along a flattening slab, consistent with observations from other studies.

Comparative Analysis of the Sedimentary Cover Units of the Jurassic Western Tethys Ophiolites in the Northern Apennines and Western Alps (Italy): Processes of the Formation of Mass-Transport and Chaotic Deposits during Seafloor Spreading and Subduction Zone Tectonics

Andrea Festa et al.

Summary: The chaotic rock units in the Northern Apennines and Western Alps, representing Jurassic ophiolites, were influenced by tectonic deformation and high-pressure metamorphism during formation, leading to debates on their lithostratigraphic position. A comparative analysis of these units revealed the nature of processes involved in their formation and suggested that they can be used as proxies for identifying metamorphosed counterparts. The sedimentological processes associated with slow-spreading MOR tectonics and accretionary prism development were found to contribute to sediment budgets, indicating uniform and synchronous processes in the formation of Jurassic oceanic lithosphere in the LPOB.

Peridotites, chromitites and diamonds in ophiolites

Jingsui Yang et al.

Summary: Ophiolites, segments of oceanic lithosphere emplaced onto continental crust, provide insights into processes such as continental rifting, mantle melting, asthenospheric upwelling and cooling of oceanic lithosphere. Chromium spinel and associated mineral inclusions in ophiolitic mantle sections are crucial for understanding the tectonic setting and past histories, with evidence of deep crustal recycling. Ultra-high-pressure minerals and crustal components in ophiolitic peridotites and chromitites suggest incorporation of deep-recycled crustal material, offering a window into deep crustal recycling and mantle dynamics.
