Assemblages of geomorphic units: A building block approach to analysis and interpretation of river character, behaviour, condition and recovery

Kirstie Fryirs et al.

Summary: Geomorphic units are landforms that have been created and altered by specific surface processes, each with unique morphology and sediment properties. The analysis of geomorphic units helps interpret river morphodynamics and identify boundaries along river reaches. By understanding the process-form associations of geomorphic units, it is possible to assess river behavior and potential for geomorphic recovery over time through systematic analysis.

How long do seeds float? The potential role of hydrochory in passive revegetation management

Kirstie Fryirs et al.

Summary: This study tested the seed floating time of common plant species in riparian corridors of southeastern Australia and found that most seeds sink within a week. Compared to native species, exotic species had longer floating times and higher potential for long-distance dispersal. The findings were applied to a real case study, showing that seeds could travel up to 21 km per day, highlighting the importance of passive vegetation restoration and weed management.

The re-greening of east coast Australian rivers: An unprecedented riparian transformation

Tim J. Cohen et al.

Summary: Eastern Australia's climate is characterized by extreme variability and recurring droughts. An analysis of river gauges reveals a significant decline in annual flow since 1992/93, particularly in the far South coast of New South Wales. Changes in land use and river management have contributed to the reduction in flow, coinciding with an increase in woody riparian vegetation. This increase in vegetation is the largest biogeomorphic change experienced by the SE Australian drainage network in centuries.

Rivers up in smoke: impacts of Australia's 2019-2020 megatires on riparian systems

K. A. Fryirs et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the extent and severity of fires on riparian systems in coastal catchments of New South Wales, Australia. The findings show that more than half of the analyzed streams were impacted by burning, with a significant portion experiencing extreme or high-severity burning. The widespread and synchronous burning of riparian systems is unprecedented, highlighting the need for evolving riparian management strategies to mitigate future catastrophic fires.

Seven decades of hydrogeomorphological changes in a near-natural (Sense River) and a hydropower-regulated (Sarine River) pre-Alpine river floodplain in Western Switzerland

Diego Tonolla et al.

Summary: The study found that hydropower activities have significantly impacted the morphology and biodiversity of rivers and their floodplains, leading to a decrease in floodplain habitats that depend on flood activity and sediment dynamics. However, over time, vegetation cover has increased and the ecosystem has shown signs of recovery. In regulated rivers, flood events have decreased, while in near-natural rivers, shifts between bare and vegetated areas reflect the dynamic nature of natural floodplains.

Improving river hydromorphological assessment through better integration of riparian vegetation: Scientific evidence and guidelines

Marta Gonzalez del Tanago et al.

Summary: River hydromorphology has been significantly impacted by anthropogenic pressures, highlighting the importance of improving river conditions for sustainable management. Riparian vegetation plays a crucial role in sustaining river hydromorphology, yet it is often neglected in assessment protocols. This paper reviews the relevance of riparian vegetation in river hydromorphology and proposes approaches to integrate it into monitoring and assessment practices.

Using Google Earth Engine to Assess Temporal and Spatial Changes in River Geomorphology and Riparian Vegetation

Ge Pu et al.

Summary: A new approach utilizing Google Earth Engine was developed to quantify temporal changes in river channel location and riparian vegetation extent, reducing the need for manual processing through automatic image classification. Results showed significant annual changes in riparian vegetation extent and seasonal variations in active vegetation fractions along the river.
