A test of self-medication hypothesis for drug use in homeless persons: the role of severe mental illness

Pallavi Nishith et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the self-medication hypothesis in a sample of homeless individuals. The results showed that the severity of trauma-related symptoms mediated the relationship between recent victimization and severity of severe mental illness symptoms. Additionally, the severity of severe mental illness symptoms mediated the relationship between trauma-related symptoms and illicit drug use, providing indirect support for the self-medication hypothesis. The findings highlight the importance of trauma-informed care for individuals with severe mental illness seeking treatment for co-occurring substance use disorders.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Drug Use Behaviors, Fentanyl Exposure, and Harm Reduction Service Support among People Who Use Drugs in Rural Settings

Rebecca S. Bolinski et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the opioid overdose crisis in the US, particularly in rural areas. Our study found that drug availability changed, overdose risk increased, and other drug-related harms were faced by people who use drugs in rural areas during the pandemic. It is important to ensure access to harm reduction services, including overdose prevention and drug checking for this vulnerable population.

Biopsychosocial Model Social Anxiety and Substance Use Revised

Julia D. Buckner et al.

Summary: The review evaluated the utility of a biopsychosocial model of social anxiety's relation to substance misuse and updated the model based on data from the past 5 years. Findings suggest that socially anxious individuals may use substances to manage anxiety despite some substances not directly affecting physiological responses. Other factors such as social influence, cognitive processes, and context were also identified as important in understanding substance use among socially anxious individuals. However, sociocultural factors remain understudied in this area.
