Risk of fetal or neonatal death or neonatal intensive care unit admission associated with gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging exposure during pregnancy

Almut G. Winterstein et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between prenatal magnetic resonance imaging exposure with and without gadolinium-based contrast agents and fetal and neonatal death and neonatal intensive care unit admission. The study found no significant difference in fetal and neonatal death rates between prenatal exposure to gadolinium-based contrast agents and non-gadolinium-based contrast agents. The study's findings provide reassurance about the safety of prenatal exposure to gadolinium-based contrast agents used in magnetic resonance imaging.

Identification of pregnancies and infants within a US commercial healthcare administrative claims database

Monica L. Bertoia et al.

Summary: Health care insurance claims databases are increasingly used for studies on medication safety during pregnancy. This study developed a process using Z3A codes to identify pregnancies and link infants within a commercial health insurance claims database. By utilizing diagnosis and procedure codes, over 1 million pregnancies were identified and linked to infants, with similar prevalence of pregnancy outcomes to national estimates.

Association of Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy With Risk of Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children

Elizabeth A. Suarez et al.

Summary: This cohort study suggests that antidepressant use during pregnancy does not increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. However, the strong crude associations indicate that antidepressant exposure during pregnancy may be an important marker for early screening and intervention.

Development and validation of a simple algorithm to estimate common gestational age categories using standard administrative birth record data in Ontario, Canada

Tiffany Fitzpatrick et al.

Summary: This study developed a simple algorithm to estimate common gestational age categories from routine administrative data, which had excellent performance in a sample of 1.8 million birth records. The accuracy of the algorithm exceeded 98% for all gestational age categories and agreement notably increased over time.

Hydroxychioroquine early n pregnancy and risk of birth defects

Krista F. Huybrechts et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the risk of major congenital malformations associated with exposure to hydroxychloroquine during the first trimester of pregnancy. The findings suggest a small increase in the risk of malformations with first-trimester hydroxychloroquine use, but for most patients with autoimmune rheumatic disorders, the benefits of treatment during pregnancy will likely outweigh this risk.

Summary: The study evaluated the risk of major congenital malformations associated with first trimester exposure to prescription opioids, and found that while most types of malformations were not substantially increased with opioid use, there was a slight increase in the risk of oral clefts.

Validation of an ICD-10-based algorithm to identify stillbirth in the Sentinel System

Susan E. Andrade et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated an algorithm based on ICD-10-CM to identify stillbirth cases in electronic healthcare data. The algorithm showed high positive predictive value and good agreement between claims data and medical charts for outcome date and gestational age at stillbirth. The results suggest that electronic healthcare data can be useful for detecting medical product exposures potentially associated with stillbirth.
