Trends in Use of Medication to Treat Opioid Use Disorder During the COVID-19 Pandemic in 10 State Medicaid Programs

Anna E. Austin et al.

Summary: This study examined changes in the receipt and initiation of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among Medicaid enrollees during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that while the likelihood of receiving any MOUD remained stable, there was a reduction in overall MOUD initiations immediately after the declaration of the public health emergency, primarily due to a decrease in in-person initiations that was partially offset by increased use of telehealth.

Opioid overdose survivors: Medications for opioid use disorder and risk of repeat overdose in Medicaid patients

Stephen Crystal et al.

Summary: This study found that repeat overdose is common among patients with medically-treated opioid overdose. The risk factors for repeat overdose vary depending on the type of opioid involved, which has implications for intervention strategies. Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) following an index overdose involving heroin/synthetic opioids is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of repeat overdose.

Summary: The study found that while there was an increasing trend in urine drug testing from 2012 to 2018, annual and baseline urine drug testing rates remained low in 2018, relative to numerous guideline recommendations. This highlights the need for research on better guideline implementation strategies and the effectiveness of urine drug testing on patient outcomes.
