Efficacy of Treatments for Cholestatic Pruritus: A Systemic Review and Meta-analysis

Charles Dervout et al.

Summary: Cholestatic itch is a debilitating symptom that can be caused by liver or biliary diseases. The management of cholestatic pruritus is complex. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments. The results showed that there are various treatment options available, but due to the heterogeneity of the studies, it is difficult to identify the optimal treatment.

Seladelpar improved measures of pruritus, sleep, and fatigue and decreased serum bile acids in patients with primary biliary cholangitis

Andreas E. Kremer et al.

Summary: The study found that seladelpar treatment for 1 year in PBC patients led to significant improvement in itching symptoms, quality of life, and biochemical markers. This suggests that seladelpar has the potential to address key unmet needs in PBC patients as a single agent.

Safety considerations for the management of cholestatic itch

Juan Trivella et al.

Summary: Pruritus is a disabling symptom in cholestatic liver disease, with lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and autotaxin (ATX) correlating with symptom intensity. Conventional therapies are effective for some patients, but experimental treatments may be necessary for refractory cases. Ongoing research aims to explore new drugs targeting the ATX-LPA axis for a more effective management of cholestatic itching.
