Synthesis of hierarchical porous carbon using cellulose nanocrystals as templates for supercapacitor application

Pengfei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, hierarchical porous carbon materials were prepared using cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), phenol-urea-formaldehyde resin, and KOH as templates, carbon sources, and activators, respectively. The CNC templates showed a residue rate of only 5.18% at 800 degrees C, indicating their effectiveness in forming mesopores. The introduction of KOH activation resulted in the formation of micropores, macropores, and small mesopores, leading to a typical hierarchical porous carbon material. The carbon material exhibited a specific capacitance of 194.9 F/g at a current density of 1.0 A/g, with a capacitance retention rate exceeding 74% even at a current density of 40.0 A/g. The assembled supercapacitor showed a capacitance retention rate of over 95% after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 10.0 A/g.
