The dark-PMT: A novel directional light dark matter detector based on vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes

Francesco Pandolfi et al.

Summary: The ANDROMeDa project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research, aims to develop a novel dark matter detector called 'dark-PMT' based on carbon nanotubes. This detector would have high sensitivity to DM-electron recoils in the eV energy range and could potentially reach world-leading sensitivity for DM masses below 30 MeV with only 1 g . year of exposure. Extensive R&D is required to produce carbon nanotubes with ideal properties for use as a DM target, particularly in minimizing the negative effects of non-aligned crust layers and sub-micrometer waviness. Precise tuning of evaporation and growth parameters, as well as post-growth plasma etching, will be employed to achieve this.

Unusual stabilization of γ-Fe/α-Fe nanocrystalline junctions and antiferromagnetic transition within cm-scale buckypapers of entangled multiwall carbon nanotubes

C. Lyu et al.

Summary: We observed an unusual weak antiferromagnetic coupling in Fe-based nanowires encapsulated within carbon nanotube buckypapers. A custom-designed Cl-assisted chemical vapour deposition approach was used to produce the samples. The enhancement of the Ar-vapour flow rate had significant effects towards stabilizing the gamma-Fe phase. Magnetic junctions were identified between the Fe3C, alpha-Fe, and gamma-Fe phases. A weak Neel temperature signal at T similar to 130 K was detected.

Controlling the quantity of γ-Fe inside multiwall carbon nano-onions: the key role of sulfur

Jiaxin Song et al.

Summary: One of the most interesting structural features of multiwall carbon onions (MWCNOs) and nanotubes (MWCNTs) is their excellent chemical stability, which allows for in situ encapsulation of chosen magnetic materials and multifunctional applications. This letter presents an innovative chemical vapour synthesis (CVS) approach that incorporates small amounts of sulfur during pyrolysis to control the abundance of FCC gamma-Fe in the material's structure, up to a maximum value of approximately 86.5%. The variation in the relative percentage of the encapsulated Fe-based phases was estimated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement analyses. Magnetic characterization was performed using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry with zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) curves.
