Investigating the causal relationships between excess adiposity and cardiometabolic health in men and women

Pascal M. M. Mutie et al.

Summary: This study explores the causal relationships between BMI and cardiometabolic diseases and risk factors using two-stage least-squares Mendelian randomisation and non-linear MR fractional polynomial method. The results show that there is a non-linear causal relationship between BMI and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and coronary artery disease. There are also non-linear relationships between BMI and cardiometabolic risk factors. The causal effect of BMI on LDL-cholesterol is influenced by sex and menopause status.

Sex differences in intraorgan fat levels and hepatic lipid metabolism: implications for cardiovascular health and remission of type 2 diabetes after dietary weight loss

Aaron Jesuthasan et al.

Summary: This study found that in patients with type 2 diabetes, women have similar levels of liver and pancreas fat as men, along with higher hepatic VLDL1-TG production rates. There are differences in the dynamics of triglyceride turnover between sexes in type 2 diabetes and following weight loss, which may contribute to the disproportionately elevated cardiovascular risk in women with diabetes.

Causes and Consequences of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Insights From Mendelian Randomization

Tiantian Zhu et al.

Summary: PCOS is a common endocrine disorder affecting women, and its risk factors are not well understood. Mendelian randomization studies have found that obesity, testosterone levels, insulin levels, and other factors may have a causal role in PCOS. PCOS may increase the risk of breast cancer and decrease the risk of endometrioid ovarian cancer, but it has no direct causal effect on type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or stroke.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of sex on the effects of empagliflozin in patients with HF and preserved ejection fraction. The results showed that empagliflozin reduced the risk of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for HF to a similar degree in both men and women. Sex did not modify the relationship between empagliflozin and outcomes across ejection fraction groups.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.
