Impacts of COVID-19 on Glycemia and Risk of Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Anukriti Sharma et al.

Summary: Reports indicate that COVID-19 may impact pancreatic function and increase T2D risk. A study comparing COVID-19(+) patients and matched control subjects found a statistically significant increase in HbA(1c) and T2D risk among COVID-19(+) patients. The study also suggests that COVID-19-attributed T2D risk may be due to increased recognition during COVID-19 management.

The impact of COVID-19 on Diabetic Ketoacidosis patients

Faraz Khan et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence and outcomes of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) patients before and during the pandemic, revealing that the prevalence of DKA increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic period, with higher mortality rates among DKA/COVID-19+ patients. It is recommended to screen all COVID-19+ patients for DKA and prioritize ICU treatment for DKA/COVID-19+ patients with certain risk factors.

Association Between SGLT2 Inhibitor Treatment and Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Mortality in People With Type 2 Diabetes Admitted to Hospital With COVID-19

Kamlesh Khunti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between prescription of SGLT2 inhibitors and the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or mortality in people with type 2 diabetes hospitalized with COVID-19. The study found that there was no significant difference in the occurrence of DKA or in-hospital mortality between patients prescribed SGLT2 inhibitors and those who were not.

Metabolic alkalosis in type 2 diabetic patients with severe COVID-19

Xiaomin Xie et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed data of 24 patients with severe COVID-19 and compared 11 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and 13 patients with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). The results showed that the blood indicators of T2D patients were significantly higher than those of the NGT group, and treatment with traditional Chinese medicine and beraprost sodium improved breathing difficulties and metabolic alkalosis.

Newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus, DKA, and COVID-19: Causality or coincidence? A report of three cases

Kulachanya Suwanwongse et al.

Summary: COVID-19's impact on the endocrine system has not been extensively studied, with only a few case reports indicating a potential risk for diabetes mellitus. Case studies suggest that COVID-19 may exacerbate metabolic complications of existing diabetes mellitus in patients.

Diabetic ketoacidosis and mortality in COVID-19 infection

J. S. Stevens et al.

Summary: Patients with diabetes have increased morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. The combination of DKA and COVID-19 is associated with greater mortality, driven by older age and COVID-19 severity. Factors such as higher HbA1c levels, older age, and need for pressors are related to increased risk of mortality in patients with DKA and COVID-19.

Summary: This case series presents 11 cases of combined diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic coma (HHNK) in COVID-19 patients, with a wide age range and a higher proportion of male patients. Patients mainly present with neurological symptoms, respiratory symptoms, and metabolic disorders, with a severe condition and high mortality rate.
