Antheraea peptide and its analog: Their influence on the maturation of the reproductive system, embryogenesis, and early larval development in Tenebrio molitor L. beetle

Karolina Walkowiak-Nowicka et al.

Summary: In recent years, there have been discoveries of new immunologically active peptides from insects, however, their specific physiological functions are largely unknown. This paper presents the first attempt to characterize the biological effects of a specific peptide called yamamarin on reproductive processes and embryonic development in insects, using the beetle Tenebrio molitor as a model species. The research results demonstrate that yamamarin influences various aspects of beetle physiology, including ovarian growth and development, maturation of oocytes, gene transcript levels, egg laying, embryonic development duration, and larval hatching.

Neuropeptidomes of Tenebrio molitor L. and Zophobas atratus Fab. (Coleoptera, Polyphaga: Tenebrionidae)

Pawel Marciniak et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the neuropeptidomes of two closely related tenebrionid beetles, Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas atratus, providing a basis for further functional studies and the design of environmentally friendly peptidomimetics. The identification of numerous neuropeptides and protein hormones precursors in these beetles will be useful for optimizing production programs and could potentially lead to the development of new biopesticides.

Tachykinin-related peptides modulate immune-gene expression in the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor L.

Arkadiusz Urbanski et al.

Summary: This study conducted a transcriptomic analysis to investigate the changes in the expression levels of immune-related genes in the storage pest Tenebrio molitor after treatment with Tenmo-TRP-7. The results revealed that Tenmo-TRP-7 regulates immune-related genes and provides new evidence for the functional homology between TRPs and TKs.

A possible role of tachykinin-related peptide on an immune system activity of mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor L.

A. Urbanski et al.

Summary: Tachykinin-related peptides have been shown to influence the insect immune system, particularly cellular responses. Injection of Tenmo-TRP-7 increases circulating haemocytes and affects their phagocytosis and adhesion ability. The insect nervous system may play a role in pathogen recognition and immune response regulation, similar to vertebrates.

Morphological Characterisation of Haemocytes in the Mealworm Beetle Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae)

Maria Luigia Vommaro et al.

Summary: The study provides an updated overview of the morphology of circulating immune cells from mealworm beetle adults, revealing four main cell types and highlighting the morphological plasticity and various activities of haemocytes. The research also confirms the suitability of T. molitor haemocytes as a model for studying evolutionarily conserved cellular mechanisms, shedding light on the dynamic processes of proliferation, turnover, and transdifferentiation in the haemolymph.
