Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals PDFGRα+ stromal cell subpopulations that promote proacinar cell differentiation in embryonic salivary gland organoids

Nicholas Moskwa et al.

Summary: Stromal cells can indirectly regulate the differentiation of epithelial progenitor cells through FGF2 signaling pathways. FGF2 promotes proacinar cell differentiation by regulating the expression of multiple stromal genes in different stromal cell subsets. Additionally, FGF2 can reverse the inhibitory effects of TGF beta 1 on glandular differentiation and promote proacinar cell differentiation. These findings have important implications for future regenerative therapies.

New developments in the biology of fibroblast growth factors

David M. Ornitz et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family and focuses on new developments in the field since 2015. Highlights of the past 6 years include advancements in experimental modulation of FGF signaling, clinical use of small molecule FGFR inhibitors, expanded understanding of endocrine FGF signaling, and the roles of FGF signaling in stem cells, tissue homeostasis, regeneration, and neuropsychiatric diseases.

Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors (FGFRs) and Noncanonical Partners in Cancer Signaling

Harriet R. Ferguson et al.

Summary: FGF/FGFR signaling axis is found in various types of cancer, affecting cancer cells' invasion, migration, and resistance to therapy through amplification, over-expression, and mutations. The diversity of FGFR signaling partners supports its important role in cancer.

Budding epithelial morphogenesis driven by cell-matrix versus cell-cell adhesion

Shaohe Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that in embryonic salivary glands, budding morphogenesis is driven by the expansion and folding of a specific epithelial surface cell sheet characterized by strong cell-matrix adhesions and weak cell-cell adhesions. Experimental validation showed that cell-matrix adhesion is essential for budding morphogenesis.
