Sensitivity of physical membrane damage detection on low pressure membranes of commercialized specification

Yong-Soo Lee et al.

Summary: This study used a pressure decay test to evaluate the performance of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes that had been in use for many years. The results showed that the membranes did not achieve the expected removal efficiency, which was attributed to the decrease in membrane hydrophilicity and strength.

Evaluation of structural/performance variation between α-Al2O3 and polyvinylidene fluoride membranes under long-term clean-in-place treatment used for water treatment

Kang Hoon Lee et al.

Summary: This study compared the structural stabilities of alumina (alpha-Al2O3) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes under harsh clean in place (CIP) and fouling conditions. The results showed that the alpha-Al2O3 membrane was less susceptible to fouling compared with the PVDF membrane and exhibited a less structural deterioration. Foulant deposition/adsorption on the ceramic membrane was confined to the surface and could be efficiently removed through hydraulic cleaning. Alpha-Al2O3 showed a lower residual fouling, stable rejection efficiency, and less filtration pressure increase compared to PVDF membrane.

Chemical cleaning reagent of sodium hypochlorite eroding polyvinylidene fluoride ultrafiltration membranes: Aging pathway, performance decay and molecular mechanism

Liumo Ren et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the aging effects of NaClO on PVDF ultrafiltration membranes, finding a significant decline in antifouling performance for aged membranes, with stabilized fouling layers leading to increased irreversible fouling resistance. The intermolecular forces in combination with the interfacial free energies were used to evaluate the fouling behaviors of aged membranes, indicating a more spontaneous foulant-membrane adhesion and reduced flux recovery after physical cleaning. Comparatively, foulant-membrane interfacial free energies were found to be more sensitive and reliable indicators of membrane fouling.
