Antifouling performance of spiral wound type module made of carbon nanotubes/polyamide composite RO membrane for seawater desalination

Juan L. Fajardo-Diaz et al.

Summary: The robust nanocomposite reverse osmosis (RO) module, assembled using crosslinked polyamide (PA) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) membranes, showed high salt rejection rates and excellent antifouling behavior in laboratory tests using bovine serum albumin in simulated seawater. The industrial vessel built with CNT-PA nanocomposite modules demonstrated superior antifouling performance and stable operation for over 100 days in pilot-plant tests with real seawater, compared to a commercial antifouling vessel. These CNT-PA nanocomposite RO antifouling modules are ideal for desalination plants, requiring less maintenance and promoting green desalination technology.

Improved antifouling performance of a polyamide composite reverse osmosis membrane by surface grafting of dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DACMC)

Qunhui Hu et al.

Summary: Antifouling properties of polyamide composite reverse osmosis membranes are crucial for industrial applications. In this study, a new antifouling material, DACMC, was grafted onto a PA RO membrane to improve its hydrophilicity and NaCl retention. The presence of DACMC enhanced the membrane's antifouling performance against anionic and nonionic surfactants, while the pristine membrane showed better performance against cationic surfactants due to stronger electrostatic adsorption at low DACMC concentrations. A high DACMC concentration resulted in the best antifouling performance for all surfactants, highlighting the importance of rational design of charge and hydrophilic properties for RO membranes treating surfactant-containing wastewater.
