The future of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in the chemical process industries

David F. Fletcher

Summary: Computer-based simulation plays a significant role in the Chemical Process Industries (CPIs) by simulating complex physics and chemistry, developing validated models, and scaling up or down processes for optimization and control. The focus is on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) which are essential for simulating fluid flow and particles. Drawing from past experiences, valuable lessons can be learned to identify current and future trends, and provide guidance for companies to integrate this technology into their design processes. The future of simulation appears promising for both academia and industry, especially for users with strong computational skills.

Comparison of analytical film theory and a numerical model for predicting concentration polarisation in membrane gas separation

K. Foo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the reliability of analytical film theory in evaluating the concentration polarisation effect in gas separation membranes. The results showed that the analytical film theory had lower accuracy in predicting the effect under high concentration polarisation conditions. However, it served as a reliable approximation in membrane gas applications under low concentration polarisation, high crossflow, and low flux conditions.

Sanghun Park et al.

Summary: The novel honeycomb-shaped spacer demonstrates superior fouling mitigation performance and permeate production compared to the standard diamond-shaped spacer, leading to improved filtration efficiency in the membrane system. This is attributed to the thinner foulant layer formed and the generation of high-magnitude turbulent kinetic energy within the spacer filaments.

Performance analysis of cross-flow forward osmosis membrane modules with mesh feed spacer using three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations

Naeem Niknafs et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of mesh feed spacer's geometry on the performance of cross-flow forward osmosis (FO) membranes. The results show that the geometrical parameters of the feed spacer affect the performance by influencing the volume of dead zones and the shear rate on the membrane active layer, with CECP modulus mainly dominated by the reverse solute flux and the volume of dead zones, and mass transfer coefficient and longitudinal pressure drop more impacted by the exerted shear stress on the membrane. Furthermore, reducing internal concentration polarization leads to an increase in CECP and magnifies the impact of the spacer's geometry on the CECP modulus.

Impact of pulsating flows on particle deposition in forward osmosis with spacers

Andreas Kastl et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to pulsating flows, the deposition rate of particles can be up to 2.6 times higher in a steady state. As a result, the average deposition decreased by a factor of 3.5 from steady state (109 +/- 67 beads mm(-2)) to pulsating feed flow (31 +/- 17 beads mm(-2)) after 4 hours of deposition. These results provide new fundamental insights into the constraints and advantages of using pulsating flows for fouling mitigation in forward osmosis systems.

Jawad AlQattan et al.

Summary: The study found that the hole-type spacer exhibited slightly higher water flux and reverse solute flux compared to the standard spacer, but flux still decreased when dealing with barium sulfate scaling. The presence of holes in the spacer helped reduce fouling accumulation on the spacer surface, and achieved full cleaning efficiency through micro-jets effect to destroy and sweep away foulants from the membrane surface.
