Systematic review on skin adverse effects of important hazardous hair cosmetic ingredients with a focus on hairdressers

Wolfgang Uter et al.

Summary: The burden of contact allergy to hair cosmetic ingredients is high among hairdressers, and there is an increased risk of sensitization compared to non-hairdressers. This highlights the importance of improving working conditions and product safety.

The 2-Methoxymethyl Modification of p-Phenylenediamine Reduces the Sensitization Risk for Hairdressers to Hair Dyes-An Occupational Hand Exposure-Based Risk Assessment

Emanuele Marco Gargano et al.

Summary: This study explored whether the use of the moderate sensitizer 2-methoxymethyl-PPD (ME-PPD) can reduce the occupational contact allergy risk for hairdressers. Results showed that ME-PPD has a lower likelihood of sensitization compared to PPD and PTD, indicating better protection for hairdressers against hair dye-related contact allergy.

Study of P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) Concentrations after Hair Dye Mixing: A Call for Safety Reassessment

Majda H. Al-Enezi et al.

Summary: Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is widely used in hair dyes and is categorized as a potent sensitizer with carcinogenic and genotoxic attributes. A study found that the levels of unconsumed PPD significantly reduced after 45 minutes in most hair dye products. However, some products still contained as high as 96% of unreacted PPD, increasing the likelihood of allergic events and related risks.

Changing trends of contact allergens: A 40-year retrospective study from a referral centre in northern Taiwan

Pin-Hsin Lin et al.

Summary: The study identified increasing trends of positive reactions to cobalt, fragrance mix I, and PPD over a 40-year period in Taiwan, with MCI/MI emerging as a significant contact allergen. Hairdressers, cosmetologists, and aromatherapists were found to have the highest prevalence of positive reactions in the most recent 10 years.
