Aduhelm, the Newly Approved Medication for Alzheimer Disease: What Epidemiologists Can Learn and What Epidemiology Can Offer

M. Maria Glymour et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disorder that affects older adults, and there is controversy surrounding the recent accelerated approval of Aduhelm, a medication for its treatment. Despite being hailed as the first disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer's, Aduhelm has not been shown to improve patients' cognitive or functional outcomes. The FDA based its decision on two prematurely terminated randomized controlled trials with conflicting findings on the cognitive benefits of Aduhelm.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease has a significant impact on individuals and society as a whole, with a large number of patients in the United States and a potential for continued growth in the future. The value of unpaid caregivers has increased despite a decline in their numbers, and healthcare costs are on the rise. Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare persist, highlighting the need for greater diversity in dementia care workforce and clinical trials.
