Clinical presentation, disease course, and outcome of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients with and without pre-existing cardiac disease: a cohort study across 18 countries

M. Linschoten et al.

Summary: Patients with heart disease have a higher mortality rate when hospitalized with COVID-19, but there is considerable heterogeneity in the association between different heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Patients with heart failure are at greatest risk of death during hospitalization with COVID-19.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on ST-elevation myocardial infarction: a cardiac magnetic resonance imaging study

Ivan Lechner et al.

Summary: This study found a significant increase in myocardial damage in STEMI patients admitted during the COVID-19 pandemic with major public health restrictions in 2020, including larger infarct size, higher frequency and larger extent of microvascular obstruction, and a higher rate of intramyocardial hemorrhage compared to phases without major restrictions. Patient characteristics were comparable between groups, except for a significantly longer total ischemia time during times of major restrictions.

Summary: This two-part series aims to provide practical knowledge and guidance for clinicians in diagnosing and managing cardiovascular disease in association with COVID-19. The first part focuses on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions in COVID-19 patients, while the second part will address care pathways, treatment, and follow-up. Recommendations are based on current knowledge and observations, subject to change with increasing evidence and updates in the pandemic, and should not override local and national healthcare authorities' recommendations.

Long COVID: post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 with a cardiovascular focus

Betty Raman et al.

Summary: Long COVID, characterized by persistent COVID-19 symptoms beyond 3 months, is expected to significantly affect the lives of millions worldwide. Cardiopulmonary symptoms are common, along with cardiovascular abnormalities such as inflammation, myocardial infarction, and arrhythmias. The pathophysiological mechanisms behind delayed complications are still not well understood, and COVID-19 is anticipated to alter the long-term trajectory of chronic cardiac diseases. Research is ongoing to evaluate treatment strategies for long COVID and its associated cardiovascular sequelae.

Neil M. Kalwani et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine was widely implemented in cardiology clinics to maintain access to care. This study found a significant increase in telemedicine use across cardiology subspecialties, with varying utilization rates. Higher rates of telemedicine adoption may improve access to care in cardiology clinics.

Summary: This study evaluated physician's opinion and availability to participate in mHealth-related clinical studies with patient recruitment and assessment through telemedicine. The results showed that most physicians were willing to participate, but anticipated lower recruiting capacity and increased difficulty in obtaining quality data. Age, medical specialty, and app use were associated with the willingness to participate.

Pharmacological Adherence Behavior Changes during COVID-19 Outbreak in a Portugal Patient Cohort

Luis Midao et al.

Summary: Concerns, behaviors, and beliefs influence how people deal with COVID-19. This study aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on adherence behavior in Portugal. The results showed that 8.2% of respondents reported improved adherence during the pandemic, while 5.9% experienced worsened adherence. Widowers and comorbid patients were more likely to be less adherent, and participants who reported negative impacts of COVID-19 on adherence were also more likely to be less adherent.

Summary: This study aims to identify the rates of telemedicine provision and predictive institutional factors among 4-year and graduate colleges and universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings indicate that only a minority of institutions offer telemedicine services, and institution type, size, and the presence of campus student health services are predictive factors. Endowment size and Minority Serving Institution status do not predict the provision of telemedicine services.
