Violence exposure and mental health consequences among urban youth

Breanna A. Borg et al.

Summary: Urban residents are disproportionately affected by violence exposure and have higher rates of mental health problems compared to non-urban residents. Urban youth have more exposure to violence, particularly firearm violence, and experience higher levels of anxiety and depression symptoms. Targeted community-wide initiatives are needed to prevent violence and improve mental health outcomes in at-risk urban communities.

Cortical-Hypothalamic Integration of Autonomic and Endocrine Stress Responses

Derek Schaeuble et al.

Summary: This article reviews the emerging literature on how specific cortical and hypothalamic nuclei regulate cardiovascular and neuroendocrine stress responses, as well as the cellular and circuit mechanisms mediating physiological stress responses. The reviewed literature highlights the current state of stress integration research and raises unanswered questions about the brain basis of CVD risk.

A Critical Role for the Paraventricular Nucleus of the Hypothalamus in the Regulation of the Volume Reflex in Normal and Various Cardiovascular Disease States

Hong Zheng et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of forebrain neural pathways and neuromodulator systems in regulating neurohumoral drive, autonomic pathways, and fluid balance. Alterations in central neural pathways, particularly within the PVN modulated by neuronal nitric oxide, are involved in regulating sympathetic outflow to the kidney, resulting in changes in fluid balance in hypertension and heart failure. Understanding these mechanisms can improve the treatment of hypertensive and heart failure conditions and their cardiovascular complications.

Post-traumatic stress disorder: clinical and translational neuroscience from cells to circuits

Kerry J. Ressler et al.

Summary: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by maladaptive symptoms following exposure to severe trauma. The neurobiology of PTSD, including genetic factors and dysregulation of fear processes, has been extensively studied. Combining molecular-genetic approaches with a translational understanding of fear circuitry could lead to transformative advances in the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD.

Tachycardia evoked from insular stroke in rats is dependent on glutamatergic neurotransmission in the dorsomedial hypothalamus

Fernanda Ribeiro Marins et al.

Summary: The study highlights the role of a glutamatergic relay in the dorsomedial hypothalamic region (DMH) in mediating cardiovascular and autonomic responses activated by the posterior insular cortex (iIC). The findings suggest that the excitatory glutamatergic pathway from iIC to DMH plays a significant role in cardiovascular alterations observed after insular stroke.

Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: a pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants

Bin Zhou et al.

Summary: Global prevalence of hypertension doubled from 1990 to 2019, with significant improvements in detection, treatment, and control rates. In 2019, 59% of women and 49% of men with hypertension were previously diagnosed, while treatment rates were 47% for women and 38% for men, with control rates at 23% for women and 18% for men. Disparities exist across countries, with some middle-income nations now outperforming high-income countries in hypertension management.
