Structures and magnetic properties of two series of Schiff base binuclear lanthanide complexes

Ying Lu et al.

Summary: The relationship between the structure and magnetic properties of two series of binuclear Ln complexes was investigated. One of the complexes exhibited field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior, while the other did not. In addition, the magnetocaloric effect of two complexes was studied.

Symmetrical Pd(II) and Ni(II) Schiff base complexes: Synthesis, crystal structure determination, spectral characterization, and theoretical studies

Mehdi Fallah-Mehrjardi et al.

Summary: New palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes of symmetrical Schiff base ligand derived from 4,5-dimethyl-o-phenylenediamine were prepared and their molecular structures were investigated using elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods. The crystal structure analysis revealed that the coordination environment of nickel in the NiL complex is tetra-coordinate with slightly distorted square planar geometry. Hirshfeld surface investigation provided further understanding of the intermolecular interactions, and theoretical calculations supported the experimental findings.

Subcomponent self-assembly of circular helical Dy6(L)6 and bipyramid Dy12 (L)8 architectures directed via second-order template effects

Xiao-Lei Li et al.

Summary: In situ metal-templated (hydrazone) condensation of 4,6-dihydrazino-pyrimidine, o-vanillin, and dysprosium ions resulted in the formation of discrete hexa- or dodecanuclear metallosupramolecular Dy-6(L)(6) or Dy-12(L)(8) aggregates. The structures exhibited unique circular helical or tetragonal bipyramid architectures, and the coordination mode of the bis(hydrazone) ligand L varied depending on the complex. The formation of the aggregates could be controlled by adjusting the reaction conditions. Dy-6(L)(6) showed a significant spin-relaxation energy barrier of 435 K, making it a promising candidate for lanthanide single-molecular magnets.

Emerging Trends on Designing High-Performance Dysprosium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Tesfay G. Ashebr et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the recent trends in key synthetic strategies for achieving exotic magnetic properties and provides representative seminal reports. Special emphasis is given to monomeric high-performance Dy(III)-SMMs realized through crystal field, predominant bond, and organometallic approaches, as well as stimulating reports on endometallofullerenes and radical-bridged systems with strong magnetic coupling. The role of spin-vibration coupling in magnetic relaxation is also highlighted. More demanding theoretical studies are anticipated to predict promising molecules with magnetization blocking at practical temperatures.

High-Coordinate Mononuclear Ln(III) Complexes: Synthetic Strategies and Magnetic Properties

Joydev Acharya et al.

Summary: Research on single-molecule magnets involving monometallic 4f complexes has been conducted extensively in the past two decades, with the aim of understanding the factors governing slow magnetization relaxation and establishing a magneto-structural correlation. The main goal is to suppress the temperature independent quantum tunneling of magnetization effect by fine-tuning the coordination geometry. Investigating complexes containing high coordination number around Ln(III) has been relatively sparse, but various synthetic strategies have been used for assembling 10- and 12-coordinated Ln(III) complexes.

Vijay S. Parmar et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that mononuclear lanthanide (Ln) complexes can be high-performing single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The focus is on mononuclear Dy-III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs with coordination numbers up to eight, covering synthesis, solid-state structures and magnetic attributes. Brief overviews are also provided of mononuclear Tb-III, Ho-III, Er-III and Yb-III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs.

Single-Molecule Magnets: From Mn12-ac to dysprosium metallocenes, a travel in time

Andoni Zabala-Lekuona et al.

Summary: The discovery of Single-Molecule Magnets in 1993 revolutionized the field of information storage by shrinking the size of bits to molecular levels. Despite initially operating at temperatures near absolute zero, collaboration between chemists and physicists have led to the development of materials that can operate above liquid nitrogen temperatures. The evolution of SMMs has involved the study of various routes towards high performance materials, with each route essential for understanding the quantum dynamics behind these molecules.
