Bismuth Redox Catalysis: An Emerging Main-Group Platform for Organic Synthesis

Hye Won Moon et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of synthetic methodologies that capitalize on the redox cycling of bismuth. It covers different catalytic methods, mechanisms, and design strategies for stabilizing low-valent and high-valent bismuth species. Additionally, a recent example of non-redox catalysis involving bismuth is discussed. The article concludes with a discussion on opportunities and future directions in this emerging field of catalysis.

Harnessing Bismuth Coordination Chemistry to Achieve Bright, Long-Lived Organic Phosphorescence

Alexander C. Marwitz et al.

Summary: A new bismuth(III)-organic compound was synthesized, displaying long-lived bright-blue-green phosphorescence in the solid state. This compound is the first to exhibit such long-lived phenanthrolinium phosphorescence at room temperature. Studies on the excitation pathway and energy transfer mechanism, as well as successful ion doping, allowed for tunability of the emission color.

A new bismuth coordination polymer with proton conductivity and orange-red photoluminescence

Mesoun A. A. Al-Nubi et al.

Summary: A new highly water stable bismuth-containing coordination polymer with orange-red photoluminescence and proton conductivity is reported. The compound features 2D layers of Bi connected into a 3D supramolecular structure via extended hydrogen bond network. An optimized, facile slow evaporation method is used for synthesis, resulting in a water stable compound with well-defined 1D hydrogen-bonded water feature leading to proton conductivity of 8.41 x 10(-6) S·cm(-1) at 85°C and 95% RH.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and luminescence properties of heteroleptic bismuth-organic compounds

Alyssa K. Adcock et al.

Summary: Four heteroleptic bismuth-organic phases were synthesized at room temperature, including different halide substitutions, as well as europium-doped phases. Significant pi-pi stacking and halide-pi interactions were observed in the solid-state structures of these phases. Photophysical measurements were carried out to determine the quantum yield and lifetime values of the visible-light emitters.
