Mechanical and Thermal Evaluation of Carrageenan/Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose Biocomposite Incorporated with Modified Starch Corroborated by Molecular Interaction Recognition

Nur Amalina Ramli et al.

Summary: Improving the mechanical and thermal properties of carrageenan biocomposite is crucial for its use as a hard capsule material. By incorporating carboxymethyl sago starch (CMSS), the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between carrageenan and CMSS was established, leading to increased strength and thermal stability of the biocomposite film. The findings suggest that CMSS is a promising alternative to gelatin-based hard capsules.

Density functional theory on ionic liquid as carbonate scale dissolver in petroleum pipelines

Ngu Kee Soon et al.

Summary: This study utilized density functional theory calculations to investigate the interaction between different ionic liquids and carbonate ions, determining effective ILs for dissolving carbonate scale and evaluating the impact of intermolecular interaction on their properties. The results showed that certain ILs had higher negative binding energies and similar bond characteristics, suggesting their potential for dissolving carbonate scale in petroleum pipelines.

The Role of Solvent Hydroxyl Functional Groups on the Interaction Energy and Growth of Form I Paracetamol Crystal Facets

Nurshahzanani Shahrir et al.

Summary: The morphology of a crystal can be influenced by the functional groups of the solvent used during crystallization. This study predicts the effect of alcoholic functional groups on different facets of a crystal and finds that the interaction between the solvents and facets is mainly governed by Coulombic interactions. The results are consistent with experimental observations of crystal morphology.

The Influence of Supersaturation and the Presence of Biuret on the Nucleation, Growth and Morphology of Urea Crystallised from Ethanolic Solutions

Aatika K. Rizvi et al.

Summary: The addition of biuret was found to increase the stability of supersaturated urea solutions, enhance nucleation rates, and lead to a more compact crystal morphology. The nucleation mechanism was found to change with increasing solute concentration, and the crystal growth rates of different faces were affected by supersaturation levels. The computational visualization and modeling of impurity binding to crystal habit planes provided rationalization for these experimental findings.

Molecular, Solid-State and Surface Structures of the Conformational Polymorphic Forms of Ritonavir in Relation to their Physicochemical Properties

Chang Wang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the multi-scale characterization of polymorphism in ritonavir, highlighting the differences between its stable form I and less stable form II. Both forms exhibit strong hydrogen bonding networks, but form II has lower solubility due to higher deformation, lattice, and surface energies.

Insight into the morphology and crystal growth of DL-methionine in aqueous solution with presence of cellulose polymers

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: Cellulose derivatives such as HEC, MC, and HPMC were used to modify the morphology and growth of DL-methionine crystals by changing crystal shape and significantly delaying crystal growth rate. The degree of growth inhibition depends on the type and concentration of additives, with HPMC showing the best effect. Molecular modeling revealed surface adsorption of additives through various interactions on crystal faces.

Electric-Potential-Assisted Crystallisation of L-Isoleucine: A Study of Nucleation Kinetics and Its Associated Parameters

Nik Salwani Md Azmi et al.

Summary: The potential of producing L-isoleucine crystals with the aid of electric potential and its effect on the nucleation kinetics of L-isoleucine were investigated using different crystallisation techniques and electric potentials. The results showed that electric potentials significantly increased the nucleation rate, but had less impact on other measured parameters.

CrystalGrower: a generic computer program for Monte Carlo modelling of crystal growth

Adam R. Hill et al.

Summary: CrystalGrower is a simulation tool that can model both crystal habits and nanoscale surface topography simultaneously, suitable for crystal growth simulation under variable supersaturation conditions. The tool is based on nanoscale coarse graining, faithfully reproducing the characteristics of crystals under low supersaturation or undersaturation conditions, and can simulate screw dislocations and internal point defects as well.

Molecular recognition of isovanillin crosslinked carrageenan biocomposite for drug delivery application

Fatmawati Adam et al.

Summary: The study showed that the interaction between carrageenan and isovanillin resulted in strong hydrogen bonds, increasing the tensile strength of the biocomposite film and allowing the hard capsule to disintegrate in water. This suggests that the carrageenan biocomposite film made from renewable and low price materials has potential for applications in drug delivery.
