Actinobacteria-enhanced plant growth, nutrient acquisition, and crop protection: Advances in soil, plant, and microbial multifactorial interactions

Debasis Mitra et al.

Summary: Agricultural land is deteriorating due to population increase, urbanization, and industrialization. To increase crop production from smaller areas, high doses of inorganic fertilizers are used, damaging soil health and causing nutrient imbalance. Recent technological advances have shown the benefits of microbial inoculants such as Actinobacteria in replacing harmful chemicals and promoting sustainable farming practices. Actinobacteria have multifunctional traits that promote plant growth, control phytopathogens, solubilize nutrients, produce phytohormones, enhance organic matter decomposition, and suppress soil-borne pathogens.

Characterization of Actinobacterial Strains as Potential Biocontrol Agents against Macrophomina phaseolina and Rhizoctonia solani, the Main Soil-Borne Pathogens of Phaseolus vulgaris in Cuba

Miriam Diaz-Diaz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of 60 actinobacterial strains as biological control agents against the two major soil-borne pathogens of Phaseolus vulgaris in Cuba, Macrophomina phaseolina and Rhizoctonia solani. Among the tested strains, 40 and 25 strains inhibited the mycelial growth of M. phaseolina and R. solani, respectively, with 18 strains showing a common effect against both pathogens. The most effective strains, identified as species belonging to the genus Streptomyces, exhibited significant enzymatic and biochemical activity, and two strains, CBQ-EA-2 and CBQ-B-8, showed the highest effectiveness in vitro. Additionally, seed treatments with the combination of these two strains significantly reduced the disease severity caused by both pathogens.

Do the beneficial fungi manage phytosanitary problems in the tea agro-ecosystem?

Abhay K. Pandey et al.

Summary: Fungal Biocontrol Agents have shown significant potential in the biological control of pests and plant pathogens in economically important crops like tea. While they are environmentally friendly, their impact on non-target organisms in tea gardens is still not well understood. Commercialized FBCAs have limited effects on arthropod pests and pathogens in tea ecosystems, but their practical applications as bio-pesticides are still being explored.

Application of Streptomyces Antimicrobial Compounds for the Control of Phytopathogens

Sandra Pacios-Michelena et al.

Summary: One of the current challenges in agriculture is the significant crop losses caused by phytopathogenic microorganisms, with synthetic chemical pesticides and antibiotics posing health and resistance issues. Streptomyces genus shows promise as a biocontrol agent, but further research is needed to improve its efficacy and shelf life.
