Renal Dysfunction Criteria in Critically Ill Children: The PODIUM Consensus Conference

Julie C. Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the criteria for defining renal dysfunction in critically ill children and its association with adverse outcomes, and to develop contemporary consensus criteria. The systematic review supports several criteria for renal dysfunction, and also identifies criteria for persistent renal dysfunction and high risk of renal dysfunction.

Early and late acute kidney injury: temporal profile in the critically ill pediatric patient

Amanda Ruth et al.

Summary: This study explored the timing of onset of AKI during pediatric critical illness and its impact on outcomes. The results showed that the temporal nature and trajectory of AKI are significantly associated with patient outcomes, and stratification of pediatric critical care-associated AKI into distinct phenotypes may become an important prognostic tool.

Trajectory of AKI in hospitalized pediatric patients-impact of duration and repeat events

Brady S. Moffett et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in pediatric inpatients and is associated with mortality. The severity of AKI and the occurrence of multiple AKI events are also associated with increased mortality.

Timing of Fluid Overload and Association With Patient Outcome

Lisa Lima et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if the timing of excess fluid accumulation is associated with adverse patient outcomes. The results showed that peak fluid overload value after 48 hours of ICU admission was related to longer ICU and hospital stays, as well as increased risk of mortality.

Association Between Acute Kidney Injury Duration and Outcomes in Critically Ill Children*

Rashid Alobaidi et al.

Summary: In critically ill children, both persistent and transient acute kidney injury have different clinical characteristics and associations with outcomes. Acute kidney injury, even when short in duration, is significantly associated with worse outcomes and this risk increases with longer persistence independent of severity.

Clinical phenotypes of acute kidney injury are associated with unique outcomes in critically ill septic children

Rajit K. Basu et al.

Summary: The assessment of acute kidney injury in septic patients remains imprecise. In a multinational study, AKI diagnosis in critically ill septic children was stratified by duration and severity. Results showed that AKI phenotypes incorporating temporal and severity data correlate with unique outcomes, highlighting the importance of prognostic enrichment in sepsis and AKI for trial design and patient management.

Cumulative Application of Creatinine and Urine Output Staging Optimizes the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes Definition and Identifies Increased Mortality Risk in Hospitalized Patients With Acute Kidney Injury

Scott M. Sutherland et al.

Summary: This study proposed an Acute Kidney Injury Score by combining creatinine and urine output criteria, which more accurately characterizes the severity and outcomes of acute kidney injury. The results showed that higher scores were associated with increased mortality and nonrecovery risks.
