Accelerated corrosion testing in molten fluoride salts: Effect of additives and the crucible material

Viliam Pavlik et al.

Summary: New aspects of corrosion resistance/attack of Incoloy 800 H/HT in FLiNaK at 680 degrees C were studied. The effect of various impurities and their concentration on the corrosion was analyzed. Results showed that acidic or hydrated salts, the use of a GC crucible and higher concentration of additives all increased corrosion. It is crucial to avoid the presence of hydrogen after purification, as it triggers corrosion along with other substances.

Corrosion behavior of pressureless sintered SiC in molten LiF-NaF-KF salt: Role of metallic impurities in the salt

Miaomiao Hu et al.

Summary: The corrosion of pressureless sintered silicon carbide in molten FLiNaK salts at 700 degrees C is affected by impurities in the salt, causing local corrosion along grain boundaries and intersections of grains. This corrosion results in the formation of carbon, Fe3Si, and dissolvable Si-containing products. The reaction between SiC and metallic impurities in the salt enhances the outward diffusion of Si and drives the corrosion of SiC.

Potentiodynamic Polarization of Pure Metals and Alloys in Molten LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNaK) Using the K/K+ Dynamic Reference Electrode

William H. Doniger et al.

Summary: The potentiodynamic polarization method using the K/K+ dynamic reference electrode was employed to investigate the corrosion behavior of Ni, Fe, Cr, Ni-20Cr binary alloy, and 316L stainless steel in molten FLiNaK salt at 700 degrees C. The results showed that Cr dissolved rapidly, while Ni and Fe remained stable in FLiNaK. Comparisons of the apparent redox potentials of different materials with respect to the K/K+ redox couple provided insights into the relationship between the applied potential and the dominant corrosion mechanism for each alloy. Polarized pure metals exhibited uniform surface recession, while corrosion in the alloys resulted in preferential dissolution of elements depending on the applied potential with respect to the K/K+ reference reaction.

Analysis of Corrosion of Hastelloy-N, Alloy X750, SS316 and SS304 in Molten Salt High-Temperature Environment

Ketan Kumar Sandhi et al.

Summary: In the construction of molten salt reactors (MSR), Nickel superalloy Hastelloy-N demonstrated the best corrosion resistance, even gaining weight after exposure to molten salt corrosion. On the other hand, alloy X-750 suffered the most severe corrosion loss, followed by SS316 and SS304.

Corrosion of pure Cr and W in molten FLiNaK with hydrogen fluoride solution

Gaku Yamazaki et al.

Summary: The study showed that the corrosion rates of pure Cr and pure W in molten FLiNaK differ, with W showing better corrosion resistance compared to RAFM steel. Additionally, the oxidation reaction rate of W was lower than that of Cr, demonstrating better corrosion resistance.

A novel purification method for fluoride or chloride molten salts based on the redox of hydrogen on a nickel electrode

Yong Zuo et al.

Summary: A novel purification process for molten salts using H+/H-2, Ni electrode was proposed, which showed higher deoxidation efficiency compared to traditional methods. The process only used H-2 as a purification gas, avoiding toxic emissions like HF or HCl. Possible applications of the proposed method were also discussed.
