Arylazopyrazole-functionalized photoswitchable octanuclear Zn(II)-silsesquioxane nanocage

Kai Sheng et al.

Summary: A novel octanuclear Zn(II) nanocage has been designed and synthesized with reversible photoswitching behavior, showing quick trans-to-cis transformation upon 365 nm light irradiation and slow cis-to-trans reversibility at room temperature. This material can be considered as a molecular pump energized by light, acting as an energy reservoir that absorbs light energy and releases it slowly with time.

Supramolecular construction of a cyclobutane ring system with four different substituents in the solid state

Michael A. Sinnwell et al.

Summary: Rare and challenging, the preparation of cyclobutanes with four different substituents has been achieved through a cocrystallisation strategy enabling [2+2] cross-photoreaction of non-symmetrical stilbene derivatives to yield chiral tetrasubstituted cyclobutanes with up to four different substituents in quantitative yield.

Cubane-forming cyclic dienes that exhibit orthogonal reactivities in the solid state

Changan Li et al.

Summary: Photoirradiation of a binary cocrystal composed of two different cyclic dienes leads to the regioselective and quantitative formation of a highly-symmetric cubane-like tetraacid cage. One diene component undergoes a double [2+2] photodimerization to form the cage, while the second diene reacts as a pure form in a double [2+2] photodimerization. The stereochemistry of the cage is structurally confirmed.

Opportunities Using Boron to Direct Reactivity in the Organic Solid State

Gonzalo Campillo-Alvarado et al.

Summary: This research highlights the opportunities to direct chemical reactivity in the organic solid state using organoboron molecules, focusing on achieving [2+2]-photocycloadditions in crystalline solids through hydrogen bonding of boronic acids and boron coordination in boronic esters. Organoboron molecules act as templates to organize alkenes for regio- and stereoselective reactions, and future developments in boron in materials and solid-state chemistry are discussed.
