Lithium Extraction Techniques and the Application Potential of Different Sorbents for Lithium Recovery from Brines

Rebekka Reich et al.

Summary: Geothermal power plants produce high-temperature fluids enriched in lithium, which remains an unprocessed resource. To meet the increasing demand for lithium, it is crucial to explore new degradable lithium resources. Sorption and ion exchange methods show the highest potential for lithium extraction. Promising inorganic sorbents include lithium-manganese oxide, iron phosphate, and zeolite. Evaluating their effectiveness in large-scale industrial production under geothermal conditions is important.

Single-Step Fabrication of a Dual-Sensitive Chitosan Hydrogel by C-Mannich Reaction: Synthesis, Physicochemical Properties, and Screening of its Cu2+ Uptake

John Rey Apostol Romal et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel modified chitosan functional hydrogel was fabricated using a process-efficient protocol. The hydrogel showed dual-responsive swelling behavior to pH and temperature, which is unique compared to other hydrogel systems. Under the optimal swelling conditions (pH = 4, temperature = 22℃), the hydrogel exhibited an adsorption capacity of 12.0 mg/g for Cu2+ after 36 hours of agitation with 1.2 g/L adsorbent dosage. The Cu2+ adsorption on the hydrogel surface was confirmed by EDS, and the adsorption sites were analyzed by FT-IR. The simply fabricated hydrogel presents a promising potential for heavy metal removal from aqueous media.

Adsorption and recovery of lithium ions from groundwater using date pits impregnated with cellulose nanocrystals and ionic liquid

Sara A. Wahib et al.

Summary: The study aimed to prepare a novel low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbent, IL-CNC@DP, by impregnating date pits with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and ionic liquid (IL). The batch adsorption process showed that IL-CNC@DP adsorption of lithium was exothermic, not disorder-favoring, and spontaneous. The enhanced removal efficiency of Li+ by IL-CNC@DP compared to DP was attributed to electrostatic attraction forces and hydrogen bonding, with potential selectivity towards different elements in groundwater samples isolated in Qatar.

Rare Earth Group Separation after Extraction Using Sodium Diethyldithiocarbamate/Polyvinyl Chloride from Lamprophyre Dykes Leachate

Eman M. Allam et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel adsorbent, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate/polyvinyl chloride (DdTC/PVC), for rare earth element (REE) sorption, which has higher adsorption properties and easier synthesis compared to other sorbents. The three-liquid-phase extraction technique (TLPE) was used to separate REEs into three groups. The synthesized DdTC/PVC was characterized and the factors affecting the sorption process were analyzed. The desorption of rare earth ions from DdTC/PVC was also investigated. The extracted rare earth oxalate concentrate was utilized for further separation into three groups via TLPE. This technique is simple and suitable for extracting REEs.

An acid baking approach to enhance heavy rare earth recovery from bituminous coal-based sources

Ahmad Nawab et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for recovering rare earth elements (REEs), especially heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), from coal at lower acid concentrations. Different treatment methods, including roasting and direct acid baking, were investigated and compared. The results showed that direct acid baking at a lower temperature provided the best recovery of both light rare earth elements (LREEs) and HREEs. Roasting followed by acid baking also achieved high recovery rates. The improved recovery was attributed to the dehydroxylation of clay minerals and subsequent release of REE-bearing minerals.

Summary: This research focuses on the possibility of using hydrogenated Dowex 50WX8 resin for the recovery and separation of Pr(III), Dy(III) and Y(III) from aqueous nitrate solutions. The experimental results demonstrate that the sorption efficiency of the metal ions decreases with increasing nitric acid concentration. The maximum sorption capacity is 30.0, 50.0 and 60.0 mg/g for Pr(III), DY(III) and Y(III), respectively. The sorption isotherm results suggest that Pr(III) and Y(II) follow a nonlinear Langmuir isotherm model, while Dy(III) fits a nonlinear Toth isotherm model. A flow sheet summarizing the sorption and desorption processes is provided.
